Vehicle Check

57K miles on the dial and out of warranty 2011 X5, started getting vehicle check notification last week. Called the dealership to find out how much for Vehicle Check, got quoted $245… Is that standard price you have to pay every 7500 miles for multipoint inspection?

The Beast is due for an oil change after 2500 miles but am i correct in assuming that the vehicle starts alerting you 2-3K miles before hand? or is there something wrong with the vehicle.

Any thoughts?

1. Out of warranty - you do your own checks and fixes. Just reset that warning.
2. Even with warranty - federal law prohibits dealers voiding warranty if maintenance is done somewhere else. As long as receipts are kept.

The check is just to hopefully get you to dealer and spend $245. Of course, you can do it if you want - but I am very sceptical in any value their checks bring.

Most dealers will do a courtesy check for you (whether your car is in warranty or not) if you take the car in for an oil change or other routine service. It may not be nearly as thorough as a full pre-purchase or CPO check, but they should be able to tell you if anything is obviously wrong (at least to the extent, if not more, than you can do in your own garage).

If you're just interested in upcoming service due, you can check the Vehicle Info section of the iDrive as it will show when the computer thinks you need an oil change, brakes, etc...
