Timing chain broken - 2009 X6 35D
Hello:
I am petrified. The timing chain broke last Thursday while driving at 40 MPH. A huge thud rocked the car which continued to roll on for about 200 meters till final stop. I have only 135 thousand km with the car, and nothing predicted this tragedy. Did all my yearly checks at the official BMW dealer where I bought the car. Went to the dealer which told me I need a new engine worth 12,500 USD. I am speechless. |

There been a lot of recalls for timing chain:
https://www.google.com/search?q=bmw+...utf-8&oe=utf-8 I would push your dealer to check with BMW about it being covered under one of the recalls.

Thanks a lot, dmlgc. Will do my best to get the dealer to pay for the repair, even if it's very very hard (There is a petition online with over 8600 signatures addressed to the CEO of BMW) Not sure if there where official recalls from the company for the M57D30TU2 (which I presume it's my engine model) but will check at the dealer.

Well if all 8600 went to BMW's Facebook page and posted your complaints, I am sure you would get some kind of response.

I will ask the mechanic to remove the covers needed so I can see with my own eyes the damage done. And for sure I'll make some photos and post them here and on FB BMW page. So far they didn't show me anything, just handed me the invoice for a new engine. I am in post traumatic syndrome now and want to see what's inside, so I can learn and have a clear heart and mind.
PS: That petition was for N47 engine. Couldn't find something big on timing chain failures for my engine type M57. |

Just talked to my friend who sold me the X6 when he was a salesman at BMW official dealer, and told me there were a lot of issues with X's due to the Castrol engine oil they used (now replaced by Shell, but nobody told me that before the disaster). So X6 owners that don't park their cars in a heated garage during winter, be careful. Also, that the components that keep the timing chain tensed, were a bit too thin, from start. Combined with a thickened oil during winters, at cold startup and drive off, , you might get into this kind of huge trouble. Also please do replace your timing chain at aprox. 80k miles (doesn't matter what mechanics say) and also do replace your transmission oil, even if they tell you it has a lifetime warranty.

Will post pics of the damage, as soon as they are available. Received approval from BMW dealership to make photos of the damage. We will dissasemble the engine, step by step. And I will post the pics, here.

Bilbofraggins, you should also check and replace the transmission oil since I also had trouble with the gear box. Not sure yet if there are misreadings from the computer, but the car didn't want to downshift in automatic, in many, many cases. "Transmission error" on the screen, please bla, bla. Stopped the car, removed the key, started again, no more error. I am afraid to open the gear box too, when dissasembling the engine to check the damage caused by the broken timing chain. But will do it. If transmission oil is like mud, BMW should give me some serious explanations, and hopefully some compensations.

Jeez, this sounds like a nightmare. Sorry to hear it. My X5 35D has 90k miles. It's never missed a beat, always had services done within mileage or time. Recently had the trans oil and filters changed. I'll quiz my mechanic about the chain for sure after reading this.
Thanks for sharing. |

Had a customer with the same issue. Chain snapped out of nowhere. As dmlgc said, they have had a lot recalls trying to remedy this. I was able to get insurance to cover it because the dealer told him he was out of luck. Hope it works out for you.

The dealer is making a tech report on this and will send it to the BMW authority here in Romania. Those have to make their own decision and hopefully we can reach an agreement so that I will not be the only one to pay for the damage.

As a side note; I had our vehicle checked over before the warranty ends on the 29th. When the service advisor was looking over the truck's info when I first brought it in, he muttered "Phew, not a diesel". he then looked at me and wouldn't expound.....

One week passed. No call yet from official BMW representative. The more time passes, the more I don't give a shit anymore, about this car. I am not calling them. I am not going to submit to their dirty game, to get desperate, and pay in full for their defective engine parts. If they don't accept to share the costs of repairing the damage caused by their faulty components, I will let the tank rot in their yard. And surely will buy a Volvo XC 60 to take my family in vacation to the beach, this summer.

Hi akraptor,
You must mail your complaint to company's CEO. By the time you should also take second opinion from top rated BMW mechanics. If they also suggest you for new engine then take estimate and whereever it seems to you somewhat cheap, go there and get it replaced. |

My 2010 E72 X6M just bit the dust. 85k I think my Timing Chain went as well. I purchased the www.autoaid.de and pulled the following codes:
