For us it was only $29k out of the door including tax and license. cheap if you asked me. Could have 3 of them with what I paid for the X5M. One in each color! Our Prius is a 3 model with NAV, sunroof, solar panel and backup camera. Save gas? Just a bragging right, we don't really care. Our stable cost us over $300k.
We bought it on the notion to have the funkiest, mad science technology to screw around with. By freak accident we ended up loving it. So can you say Frankenstein? |

For me it was more about driving a car that is less flashy, attracts less attention & something I am not worried about when parking it or driving in heavy traffic day after day. Saving $ on gas was the bonus & @ $4+/gal at the moment, I'm feeling better. |

A X5 is not flashy either, so many of them everywhere. I blend right in with the rest of the soccer moms, especially here in Los Angeles.
And no one know what a X5M is. |

Getting a Prius it's just the trendy thing to do. I guess all the Hollywood celebs that Toyota gave free cars to payed off in the long run

I like the prius. Used to drive my neighbor's. We have 2 cars, an '04 325Ci and an '11 x5 5.0i. My wife walks to work every day and I like to drive the 325 to work when weather permits to keep the miles off the 5.0, but the 325 is pretty beat up at this point. I am contemplating a lexus ct200h to replace the 325 soon.

Well, kudos to the OP. I personally think a small diesel car can potentially bring in more savings than a hybrid. Hopefully I can afford a "beater car" one day

The pricing is ballpark the same as the Prius, but can get higher if all decked out. For me it was the interior room. I'm a big guy so it was a tight fit in the Lexus. |

Awesome! I bought a 2012 prius plugin a few months ago. Mpg is amazing, and the car is more relaxed to daily drive.
For fun, nothing like the BMW though. The tech in the prius is cool and a balanced car enthusiast will appreciate it. I almost got the lexus ct200h too, but like you said - prius has more room and mpg is better. |

I recently was given a new 328i as a loaner car, it pulls very strong at all speed, engine was very smooth and quiet. Later I realized it was only a 4 cylinder turbo, I knew it was turbo charged from the way it pulls, but didn't expect it to be a 4 cylinder.
I tried to drive it using the Prius driving technique and ended up averaging 30 mpg. I would say the 328i definitely makes a very affordable and efficient entry BMW. |

This thread is too funny.
anyway, the whole saving gas thing only makes sense if you drive a ridiculous amount of highway miles a day. My wife does 15 minutes each way in her 36mpg Sonata and the computer says it's really only getting 20mpg because part of those 15 minutes is red lights and stop/go. Now that's not a huge difference from a few X5 variants. How much does your Prius say for real and what % of your commute is a long highway drive? With all those "savings" you still spent $20k+ to start.

I often drive 200 miles in a day. At that mileage, it's 2 things: First, you don't want to put such mileage on a nice car constantly, and second, you do save a lot of money.
Does it offset the cost of a second car? Well, Priuses are not the cheapest but not that expensive either- and with the gas savings, it basically pays for itself. Let's say I drive 4,000 miles in a particular month. If I drove a car that gets me somewhere in the 18-20 MPG range and needs 93 gas, I'm going to be spending over $800 in gas. Even worse if it's an X5M or something worse on gas. The Prius also takes 87 vs 93. With the Prius, you will be spending in the $200-$300 range as I consistently get 50-55 mpg. That's a big savings monthly - it can pay for a monthly finance payment and insurance! And another minor thing it does: After driving a car like a Prius, you get back in your "nice" car and that car feels more special. I've daily driven my nice cars before, and you sort of get used to them and take them for granted. But here's the caveat as has been mentioned: You need to drive a lot of miles in a given month for you to really save on gas and for it to make sense. I'd guess around the 2,500 mile mark is where you start to really see more savings. |
