Hate to bring back an old thread from death but the dealership here in Wiesbaden, Germany is telling me they're going to put 10W60 in my 2011 X6M. LOL

What car are you talking about picking up at the Welt? Because it's certainly not an X5M or X6M (they are built in South Carolina, US of A)

Edit: Damn it didn't see this is an old thread. Maybe that guy finally got his X5M or X6M shipped to the Welt?

We had little confusion between a part guy and service adviser. The correct one was 5W-30.

Care to elaborate?

With all of the confusion and different answers from multiple dealerships, I'm inclined to put 5lt of 5w30 and 5lt of 10w60. LOL

Confusion came from the fact that the most of (not sure whether it was all) M cars have used 10W-60 before. When the part guy on the counter first heard just "M" even though I said X6M, he told me to go with 10W-60 without checking anything. Then 3-4 months later, I went in again for some more but this time I happened to talk to a service guy I always go with. He said that 5W-30 is the correct one. So, I had to ask him to double-check it and he showed me his computer screen. 10W-60 is for the high revving non-turbo M cars. A service guy just gave me 3 bottles of 5W-30 without any charge so I don't have to come back for a while.

I'm inclined to agree with you since both the M5 and M6 take 5w30. Same engine we have.

Anyways, I have a contact checking with the horses mouth in Munich to find the real deal. I'm trying to get get it in writing so when the dealership wants to put 10w60 in the engine, I can ask them why.

also, 10W60 is about twice more expensive than 5W30. It turned out that I have been getting 5W30 for my regular engine oil change based on my service record and I hadn't paid attention to it at all before. When I had to buy my own to top it off, I got two different answers and realized that this has been a kind of hot topic here.

I know. I had an M3 that required that syrup.

Anyways, my contact spoke with BMW M in Munich and the proper engine oil for the X5M / X6M is 0w40.

You are fine. US technical service bulletins calls out 5W-30 for X6M and X5M.

5w-30 works great. Same thing for my N54 (135). So, since BMW is extending the M label, it appears that only the high revving engines (E46 & E9x M30 use the 10-60 (what my M3 uses). ANywhere we can get the 0-40? ( I live in Vegas, oil temps get high easily around here, esp on track days).

Hello,
I decided to do some DIY maintenance after my first year of enjoying my M. Just changed the oil/filter and the air filter on my M at 7,500 and here are the DIY highlights.
Fist I used BMW -866 oil from http://parts.bmwofalexandria.com/pro...52d866%29.html for $6.44/Qt. The M needs to be jacked up and or on ramps for changing the oil, as both plug and filter are located underneath. The oil pan drain plug is located in the center of the oil pan, and requires an 8mm Hex wrench or socket for removing. I was not able to suck out the oil with my vacuum extractor, as there is no dipstick or way I found to do this. Anyway, the oil filter is located under the SAV also. The oil was black as crude, and maybe I will send it out for analysis. Removing of the oil filter was quite a bit more messy, as there is no damn oil plug in the oil cap, like on the 7 series. Removing of the oil filter cap requires an BMW cap socket. When you remove it do it slowly, or you will make a map of Italy on your garage floor. Even with care I still spilled some, and I will look to see if I can purchase a cap with the plug for draining. The oil filter kit contains the replacement seal for the oil cap drain plug, pan plug crush washer, and cap O-ring. Putting the new oil filter+cap was fairly easy. I then lowered the SAV and added 8 quarts of the -866 ran the engine for 10 minutes and checked the oil level with Idrive. Damn it is a PITA not having a dipstick. Level was at Max so all good. However, in two days driving, checked oil level again and it was 1 quart down, so I topped it off.
Now for the air filters. There is a great thread on changing the air filter http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=499319. Thanks Bleudyno. There is a left and a right filter, so change them both. Mine were very dirty after 1 year and 7,500 miles. They are quite small, with respect to surface area, this fire-breather of an engine has less surface area on its air filter than my FX45.
All is working fine.
Enjoy

Crazy topic. I'm going to the dealership to have them fill up the oil, from everything ive read the 5w-30 is the right choice. Oddly enough, my x5m came with an extra bottle in the trunk, and it was the 10w-60. still confused...

This thread scares the shit out of me. So many of you with wrong oil in your cars. If you have 10-60 in your X5/6M/s63 engine get it OUT now. Its too thick. The dealer doesnt know what the hell they are doing if they are putting the wrong oil in your car. Here is what the dealer doesnt show you and what they should be checking. This is from the ISID. The s63 requires 5-30 end of story.
