00-06 X5 reliability?
exactly as title states. what kind of problems have you guys had with your first gen. X5s? Im looking to get a 3.0 sometime in the future. do these hold up pretty well with some mileage? or would you suggest not to touch one with over 50k and no warranty? thanks!

I bought a 2006 3.0 with 7,000 miles on it (CPO) last year. I did so after seeing two friends with older X5's have great luck. So far, after 10,000 additional miles --- it is as solid as a rock; very reliable. I'd like to hear from some higher mileage owners.....

My wife's 2005 X5 (3.0) has had two issues...
1) Moonroof(s) would not close from vented position. This required a complete replacement of both moonroofs (under warranty thank goodness). Parts alone were over $1800. 2) Rear A/C / heat quit working. Again fixed under warranty. So far, no other issues w/ 35k miles.

Reliability will vary based upon who services it.
I have ~200k miles on my 2001 X5 3.0i - 5sp Manual. Routine items like oil and filters, I do myself every 5k miles - BMW recommended change intervals in my words are too lengthy. Thing I can't do myself like belts, fluids, clutch, CV boots and AC, the dealer or the local BMW specialty shop does for me. The OEM brake pads & rotors wear to fast - upgrade to Porterfield Pads (dustless) and Brembo rotors (using slotted) - better cooling when pushing it hard and eliminated brake fade. As for reliability, here my list of service work excluding routine oil changes and when the service light went yellow. 1. Battery failure within 25 months - replaced under warranty (RUW) 2. Water pump seizure and belt snapped - no warning signs - RUW 3. Brake rotors/pads - worn out @ 35k mi - RUW 4. Rear Wiper motor - RUW 5. Brake rotors/pads - worn out @ 69k mi - RUW 6. Front Control Arm bushings - broke, replace all - RUW - Left steering knuckle - RUW 7. Front CV Joint Boots - normal wear & tear - RUW 8. Transaxle - service guy forgot to change the oil seal when he pulled the sub axle when replacing CV Boots as required, inner seal has a spring ring that fell into transaxle, long story short - caused failure at dealer expense. 9. Cooling system Catch Tank - cracked, RUW - Fuel injector (2 failed at same time) - RUW 10. Brake rotors/pads - worn out @ 98k mi - upgraded to Porterfield and Brembo, did all four wheels at once, $600 in parts only, self installed - Rear CV Joint Boots - replaced, less that $100 in parts only, self installed 11. Alternator - OOW - Parts and Labor, ~$950, just didn't have the time to wrench Porterfield are less than half worn and rotors have 27% wear, now at ~200k No Mods, no bling, for the most part, bone stock. MPG city/highway - 18/22 when using Premium (92 octane fuel) MPG city/highway - 18/27 when using Premium (100 octane fuel) I expect the clutch to give out next. thx espresso |
