what are the proper choices of the affordable 22" wheels?

hello,

if money were no object I would build a custom set. not looking to spend too much on a set of 22s.

anyone run affordable but proper wheels ? rohanna ? AG 1 piece ?

I dont think the tires will be cheap either ....

lets see them

I was in the same boat. Just letting you know what I'm thinking about, maybe you agree?

22's look sick but you have to run a 25 in the rear and a 30 in the front. I've had that tire size on all my past cars and if you ask me now if I could go back and redo it I would just change that set up. These were regular sedans, now imagine that size on an SUV that weighs almost 3 Tons. I want 22's but I am certain that ride quality will be garbage, especially here on these streets.

You could go 21 on the rim and do a 30 rear and 35 front. That would give you a decent ride and you still look good. Just go to eBay and search "x5m wheels 21" and you get a hundred options, some reasonably priced.

Of course if this is not your DD and you just want to look good AF doing it then just go for the 22's!

I think next season ill just run powdercoat stock 20s plus spacers since I got tires ... but I do want some 22s ..if you see any decent priced ones let me know.

My solution was to get a carbon diffuser, carbon lip, and powdercoat the stock wheels a Mercedes Himalaya Gray. You get the look and you save your ride quality!

A lot of people seem to run 285/35/22 with no issues on all four corners.

I have a set in my E63 amg and no issues but I never drive. I have heard and seen many pics of failed forgestars though.

You can't really compare the 25 series on a 335mm wide tire to the 25 series profile on whatever width tire you were running on your sedans.

The sidewall height is relatively aggressive on a 335/25/22, yes. But the ride quality compared to a 20" RFT is not bad at all.

I have 285/35/22 all around on my 22's -- fitment is perfect.

The problem with Niche and some of the other less expensive wheels is that they are likely not TUV rated for the weight/load of our vehicles. While they are larger in diameter, they are typically narrower than the stock wheels, which does not seem to offer a proper look or fit IMO. However, my 22x10.5, 22x11.5 BBS SVs are TUV rated and my ride quality on them and Pirellis seems every bit as smooth, if not better than the original 299 wheels w/Bridgestone RFTs. (even being lowered on H&R 1.2s!)

I do like TheVazhas's idea of Powdercoating style 299s in Mercedes Himalaya Gray or in Titanium Gunmetal... I bet that would be a good look.

Just because a wheel hasn't gone through the TUV approval process doesn't necessarily mean the design can't easily handle the weight /load. If you aren't familiar with the TUV approval process, just know that it's extremely thorough and expensive. That being said the financial investment might not make sense for a company that's not specializing in selling sets for $3k+. Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of variances in quality and if you are looking for the highest quality, buying a TUV approved wheel is the way to go but it will come at a cost. My point is that you don't have to spend a fortune to get a high quality wheel that will be able to handle the loads of the X5 nor does it have to be TUV approved. Just do your research on the wheel manufacturer and how the wheel is manufactured.

Most of the 18" stock rims are 18x8, so the theory that the 22's are likely going to be more narrow seems to lack merit. Most 22's are 22x9, at the least. Mine are 22x10.5 all around. I seriously doubt the extra .5" to 22x11 is going to make a different in the overall structural support.

Money a factor....AVG M310 or M359s, very OEM at about half the price.

I'm very biased, but HRE is the only option if you're going to go big budget on the wheels. If you're gonna go big, go all the way IMO.

Also, FWIW, I think the OEM X5M wheels and style 333 M sport wheels look considerably better than basically all of the 22" budget wheel options.
