Anybody drives off right away in cold weather?
Just wondering. . I forget all the time to stay at least one minute at idle in cold weather, before taking off. . Why no engine temp. gauge on the dash?

What I do once I start the car is wait for the RPM to come down to idle as it always starts a little higher, then settles down. Then I start driving. However, when its cold I do look at the oil temperature and don't drive aggressively (high rpm) until the oil temp has moved past the coldest point. Hope this helps!

Seems like I remember reading somewhere ( maybe the manual) that you don't have to "warm" the car up before driving off. I always wait until it drops from 1500rpm to 500rpm before driving off, just seems right for some reason. Maybe someone with intimate knowledge of the various engines available can comment.

mercedes have water temp. gauge, bmw has oil temp. gauge.
So i think it depends where the temp. sensor is located within the engine, to determine which would be more accurate & useful. Does anyone know? |

I jump in start and drive in any weather no probs, no need to wait, hot or cold makes no difference as long as you don't rev the nuts off it cold.

Start the car and drive off immediately.
You don't want the engine warm and the drivetrain cold. When you drive off immediately, drive modest until everything wamrs up together. Starting a car and waiting for it to warm up is very 1960's. It no longer applies to new cars.

Deda, that's the way to go. Start driving immediatelly (without warming up), and warm the engine during first few km's of drivin'.
By the way, that was also recommended procedure in manual for my Cayenne (previous car). "Deda, pozdrav u Hrvatsku!" |
