Do you own a BMW now? I believe there is some loyalty money available. I think the price is a tad high for a 3.5

What's the MSRP and negotiated sales price? Sounds very high to me - I'll guess the MSRP is around 60. At that number, you should be well under 700/mo.

Don't forget about the $1,000 free money from the national BMW car club. Of course you need to be a member for a full year before before being able to get it.

Ever used Edmunds?

Have you ever used edmunds.com ?

I find them to be a very good resource for pricing and the include regional variances.

2 things you may want consider are:
What is the MSRP and the True Market Value for your area?
What are the financing options being offerd?

Knowing these prior to going the the dealershio and meeting with a salesman can be a huge benefit to you.

Your salesman may have given you the True Market Value for SoCal and the best financing but then added in all of the extra's that the finance guys try to sell you, pre-paid tire damage replacement insurance, extended warranty, interior stain protection, etc...

I decline all the extras, you'll find other people that choose them. You will have to make your own decision on this.

Here is what I found on edmunds related to your query.
True Market Value
Leasing Option

Good Luck
