Tpms

Hi I installed new 20x10's on my 2011 x5 and ordered them with the tpms sensors. When I hit the reset button and drive off, I'm getting the malfunction warning. I think they may have installed the wrong sensors or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

They need to be registered to your car by an installer.

The TPMS style changed for 10/10 and later builds. You need the correct version for the build date of your car.

Not true.
I had the exact same scenario as the OP, so after ordering the CORRECT sensors for my 2011 build, I DID have to register them to my car, but keep thinking you're right.

I have had multiple sets of TPMS for my 5 set of wheels I currently have for my 2011 m3(3 sets) and 2011(lemoned) and 2012 X5(2 sets) . I have purchased 3 OEM sets of TPMS and never had to have the dealer "register them". I have had winter sets on my 2007 x5 and 2008 550 and once again, never had to "register" the TPMS by the dealer . Like stated by a previous post, the TPMS units were changed in the X5 starting on the MY2011 10/10 LCI builds. If you have a pre 10/10 with new sensors or post 10/10 with old sensors you will get a malfunction.

I know multiple people who purchased TPMS units from Non-OEM sources and once again, never had to "register them" with the car by BMW.

You do not have to register them, they just have to be the right ones (based on build ate) with the correct frequency.

I never said anything about the dealer-I said installer. I purchased new sensors from Fishcake on Ebay (who first verified the correct part number) which 007_e350 is also buying. NTB put them on, and had to register/initialize them to the vehicle since I have another set. They work perfectly.

You do realize that the only thing your installer did was reset the TPMS via the IDrive. I have to do this every time I switch wheels.

The installer scanned for the sensor IDs with a Bartec 400SD, which was then plugged into the OBDll port.

Why has this not been done on my cars? On both my winter sets and my track set, I dropped my rims and TPMS off at my tire guy, he called me to come pick them up when they were done. I took them home to my house and installed them at a later date. NEVER registered or plugged anything into the ODBII port and they worked. Maybe this is needed for aftermarket sensors but is not needed for OEM sensors.

Maybe your tire guy did something similar to mine, but didn't give you the details. OR, maybe my tire guy bypassed the iDrive initialization by overselling me and doing the OBDll programming.

He (good friend of mine) could not have done anything because the cars were never present in the shop. I dropped off 2 sets of rims and 8 TPMS sensors. He mounted and balanced the rubber. Called me when they were done. I took my truck, loaded both sets in the back and left. Installed my winters when needed and they worked.

I just did the same with my track set. Took the rims and sensors to the store, he mounted and balanced them and I picked them
Up. On Sunday, I installed the track setup and hit the road to make sure there were no issues with the tires before I need them for track duty. Just reset the sensors, drove around till they registered. Made sure all was good and took them off and reinstalled my summers.

Regardless, the OP has plenty of feedback here to try resolving his problem.

Sensors

When I bought my winter set up they came with the wrong sensors. I ordered the correct sensors from Tire Rack, NON OEM, and had them installed at Pep Boys. Once they were installed I reset the sensors in iDrive doing nothing else. No visit to the dealer, no special tools at the shop just me and iDrive.
When I swap out the wheels I do the same thing, reset through iDrive.

I talked withy friend and he said that BMW does Not Need to be registered via the ODBII port. There are many other manufactures which Do follow the scan and register process.
