X5 3.0 or 4.8?
Opinions please,
The dealer has two X5s on the lot that are priced pretty close to each other. Which would you recommend? Which models have fewer reliability issues and will I be crying everytime I fill up the 4.8? 2008 4.8 29000 miles $44k Cold Weather Premium Pack Premium Sound Rear Climate Sport Pack Technology Pack 20" alloy wheels Power tailgate Sat radio Ipod/USB OR 2009 3.0 18000 miles $46k Cold Weather Heated Rear Seats Premium Package Sport PackageTechnology Package Running Boards Sat Radio Rear Seat Entertainment Both are CPO.

My vote will be for the 3.0. Plenty of power, plus longer original warranty.
At the end of the day, the mileage may not make a difference as it depends on how you drive. On my 3.0 I get about 14.6 mpg in 60/40 city/highway. Either way, you will enjoy it. |

I went through the same decision and decided on the 3.0 simply for the fact I read the 4.8 mpg goes as low as 12 mpg. I just took deliver of the vehicle this week and been avg about 15 mpg on my 08 3.0. Value wise buying a 4.8 is better upfront as you can see the prices are pretty comparable. The 3.0 is definitely not quick but not as slow as many make it out to be. Good luck on your decision, mine was easier as I needed it as a daily.

I've had both the 3.0 and 4.8. Driving wise I preferred the 3.0 because the front end seemed more nimble than the 4.8. The 4.8 is quite heavy. I thought the 4.8 would be alot faster, but it didn't feel like it to me. I mean it is faster, but maybe I had higher expectations?! Now the definite advantage is when you are on the highway and want to pass....the torque on the 4.8 is impressive. If I could've afforded it, I would've picked up the diesel, the best of both worlds. BTW, I went from a 3.0 to a 4.8 and recently bought a 3.0 again. 4.8 is definitely a gas guzzler. Its depressing to see the gas meter go down on the way back from the gas station!

thanks for all the info guys! I will definitely be leaning more towards a 3.0 if not this exact one.

Wow, even my wife thought the 3.0 was underpowered when she drove it, once she drove the 4.8 there was no going back. Eventually we bought new with the turbo 6 which has the same specs with the 8 speed trans as the 4.8 had to 60 and quarter mile times.
It is hard to swallow the fuel consumption on the 4.8, but if you trailer, the 3.0 isn't enough, if your just using as a car, you can get away without the extra power.

drove the 3.0 and 4.8, went with the 4.8. I liked the torque from the v8, and the handling from the active suspension. I'm not sure if the 3.0's have active suspension, but i'm sure someone will chime in. I also get 15-16 mpg, 90% city driving, so mpg I think is irrelevant.

i have the 3.0 and dont mind it being a little slower as it returns much better economy for me. i can average as much as 20-21 with freeway only and i have a 3500lb trailer it pulls just fine. plus i have the m3 when i need to be quick.

lease a new diesel. By the time the lease is up, there will be some used ones out there.

I bought a 3.0 for cost and gas mileage reasons. However, after a couple of years I realized that if I had to do it over again I would have chosen the 4.8. Too many situations in daily driving where the extra power would have come in handy.

I have the 4.8 and i remember drivin the 3.0 back when i was purchasing. Trust me man nothing beats the growl of the 4.8 when driving through the city. Also, from a dig the 4.8 has gobs of torque when you need it
