2011 x5 diesel check engine light

32000 miles on vehicle .....3 months out of warranty....

Yesterday got the emissions light (Amber engine), and started doing some research.

Most trips in this vehicle are of very short duration.....less than 5 miles.....every great now and then, I might drive 2 hours at interstate speed, but infrequently

2 years ago , this vehicle was part of BMW emissions recall , and have not had any problems to speak of since then.

I checked the fault code today, P2458; diesel particulate filter regeneration duration. I cleared the fault drove it 5 miles, and the light did not reappear.

Is this an issue of me not driving the vehicle enough, or hard enough, or is there something else I need to be aware of? I really hate to think of going to the dealer with this issue $$$$$$$$$$......

Anyone with any experience with this?

A veteran (lcapital) on these forums made a pretty good case about engine temperature needing to be above 75F for DPF regeneration to kick in. If your drives are less than 5 miles, regeneration has no chance to kick in.
I don't know if this particular code is complaining about not enough regeneration cycles per time (week, month?) or DPF regeneration time not lasting enough time (before engine is shut off) or whether complaint is about DPF filter clogged.

Thanks for your comments.......

I went out again yesterday, and drove reasonably hard for abut 25 miles.....and did NOT get another emissions light.......I am hoping it has been my extremely short drives that casuse this issue.......of "diesel particulate filter regeneration duration".

What would the characteristics of the vehicle be if the DPF was clogged? The vehicle drives well....no power loss....

I really havent tracked the frequency of the regenerations, so I dont know or remember the last one......

The day this engine light came on.....I had driven 2 miles...parked.....2 miles again...parked......1 mile parked...1 mile, parked......(and the 4 previous days were similar).
I am hoping this is just an isolated issue due do short drives.

Is there a need to go to the dealer?

What state is the vehicle registered? Your state may have California emissions standards and thus have additional emissions warranty coverage until 75K miles/7yrs.

Else, I wouldn't go to dealer and instead wait for forum experts to chime in - in most cases more valuable than what SA will tell you for $$.

Alabama.....not one of the "California emission states"........I believe I am going to let it ride for the time being unless it comes up again......just did about a 30 mile round trip....and again no emissions light.........Nothing like being paranoid!!!!

The whole issue sounds like DPF regeneration never kicking in due to low engine temperature. Either simply because of short drives or a bad thermostat.

You my want to enable engine coolant temperature display and take a 30-min drive on highway while taking a note of temperature.

Thank you for the info.......I think it is the short drives, but I am going to check the temps.....I did another 50 miles yesterday....no issues....

well, I spoke to soon.....

CEL came back on....P2458 Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration duration,

and a new one...

P205b, Redundant tank temperature sensor circuit range/performance.

Guess I will suck it up and take it to the dealer........

You do realize going to the dealer you put your wallet at their mercy?
Why not at the minimum get the info on your basics? Engine temperature for starter.

Expect them to start replacing sensors at $$$ a piece, chasing the problem. In the end - something as simple as thermostat.

I'm not doing the piece by piece trouble shooting with them......I will let them tell me what they think.....and I'm going to attempt to get them to get a BMW goodwill repair.....I have had a reasonably good relationship with the same SA for 9 years......I know that doesn't mean anything, but it is worth a try. Only have 32000 miles and 3 months out of warranty......I can hope....

If I strike out, then there is a BMW Indy shop here in town that gets very good reviews from folks....and I will try there......

I have a thread on here about my CEL experience. In short the first time I took it there it was the NOx sensor. The second time it was the Oxygen sensors. The reason I bring this up is when I drove off the dealer lot after the O2 sensor replacement the car was idling pretty rough. In fact the car did not sound good the whole time I was driving home. We started our usual weekly commuter trips dropping off kids at school routine which were less than 5 miles. By Friday the car sounded smoother but after reading this thread on Friday I drove her hard for at least 2 hours yesterday. Sure enough the car sounds smoother than it's ever done. Idle is still not as smooth as I want but this is a Diesel engine, it's the price you pay I guess

I guess after reading this thread I will make sure to drive the truck hard at least once a week.

update

Took my x5 to the dealer today.....long story short.....they are replacing the active tank...(sensor is integrated into tank). BMW is covering as goodwill.

I actually spoke with the SA and the Tech today, showed them my codes and description, and the tech said he was certainly he would get the same thing, and apparently he did. Also indicated that they had seen several before.

Vehichle wont be ready until lunch tomorrow, and I will post any followup info after I see the work reports.

Looks like I got lucky.

Great news!
So that took care of this: P205b, Redundant tank temperature sensor circuit range/performance

How about this one?: P2458 Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration duration

Did they say active tank sensor was the culprit of the above error?

I don't know much about emissions on 35d, but from what I read, DPF regeneration is not directly related to urea fluid and sensors.

Still highly advice to check the engine temperature..
