I see its got the new iDrive, interesting, wonder when it will be able to be ordered. I know the offical release is tomorrow on the mini website, but will it be Sept 09 production?

I like it. 7k in an SUV is more than enough. At first you can't notice the fender flares protruding anymore than the standard X6, but if you look closely, it's there. Kind of how the E92 M3 is.

WHY CAN'T PEOPLE STOP COMPLAINING?!

M did not give up the CSL to work on the X5/6 M. They suspended the CSL because they do not see it as profitable in this market!

The big and powerful SUV market is extremely lucrative with very few players. So BMW as business would be dumb to not take part of the share.

The X5/6 M are relatively simple UPGRADES from the base models, unlike the M3, which required a REDESIGN of over 70% of the components of the regular 3 series. BMW simply put in better turbos, revised some x-drive programs, and redesigned the bumpers and wheels. That's it! And with such little work they came up with SUVs that will bring BMW into a completely different niche market, namely the market dominated by the Cayenne Turbo/Turbo S.

I do share some people's concern that turbo charged SUVs are not M badge worthy... But hey, if this is going to allow BMW to make more money and reinvest the profit into better "true" M cars, why not?

Just my 2 cents.

Make money it probably will. Is it special with only so many tweaks? In my estimation, no it isn't.

I seriously doubt this will prompt BMW into making better "true" M cars as well. If this... thing makes money, expect BMW to change their M cars' formula to rather emulate this rather than becoming more special.

No matter how I try to look at it, this isn't good news for M cars in general, unless you think M cars a la AMG (slap on turbos, few holes and blisters here and there) is a good thing.

EDIT: And pardon my ignorance, but I seem to recall numerous sources quoting BMW as saying that they chose to cancel CSL plans to instead focus on M fettled X5s and X6s.

not a fan... but if BMW is willing to waste this much effort on this M variant... it gives me hope for a Z4 M.

QFT.

Unfortunately, the first thing I think upon seeing an AMG SUV is "well, 10 bucks says that guy is a huge douschebag, and likely very stupid, seeing as he saw fit to spend 70k on a glorified soccermom mobile that has 500hp, yet can barely outrun a top of the line Hyundai, and won't outcorner a base Civic. "

What does "M" mean now? Monsterously ugly? Majorly overpriced? Mamon?

No matter what mantel fanboys put them in, BMW is in the business of pursuing profits. Sure the ///M badge may seem diluted for some, I am all for the financial success of the ///M Division.
After all, if not for the Cayenne, great affordable Porsches such as the Boxster and Cayman would not have existed.

Its true, BMW is in it for the money. But in this current economic automotive climate, I don't mind BMW doing anything and everything to make a buck and stay afloat. Afterall, when the dust settles, would you rather BMW or GM, Toyota, etc.. survive? I vote for BMW!

BTW, great point about the boxster, its so true that if it wasnt for the boxster and arguably the Cayenne, Porsche as a brand would have ceased to exist about 10 years ago

I think they both look bad. The X6 is hideous. And I like the front of the standard X5 better than the M version. I'd rather have a cayenne GTS or Turbo.

Highlighted portion of your statement, is why diehard BMW fans are pissed. M stands for motorsport, not "relatively simple upgraded base model X6".

Understand the complaints.

Yup it is UGLY?

They somehow managed to make it uglier than the base model.

Besides the new Z4, BMW's designs are going in the sh*tter.

The 6 looks good. I'd rock it but if I was to choose between Porsche and the BMW, I would go with Porsche based on exterior looks and interior luxury. Not sure about performance though.

The X5M just looks plain wrong with that front bumper. My friend has full Mtech x5 that looks so much better.

I will reserve the final judgement till I see them both in person though.

Front = not bad. I'd like to see better pictures.

Back = Sexy.

Wheels = I dunno. I like those black OEM wheels they offer for the X5/X6.

Rockers = Non-M ones look better. These add too much visual fatness.

Overall, not bad. I like how the design isn't predictable (cough audi cough). I have to see one in person still.
