DIY/ Install OEM Interior Rearview Mirror EC / LED / GTO / Compass on 2012 X5

My 2012 X5 came with simple mirror with alarm light only. I was reading posts about installing upgraded mirrors on 1-Series and 3-Series but could not find anything for X5.
I started with installation instruction for this models but that did not work for my model.
So here it is, what worked for me if anybody else wants to upgrade his/her rearview mirror.
First I purchased almost new OEM Rearview Mirror BMW part # 51169192335 on eBay for $220 (Dealer is asking for $680 + tax)
Second I purchased a retrofit cable kit BMW part # 61120434330 for $35 because vehicle is not prewired for it.
Third thing you will need one wire clip to top over in to a ground wire, I got mine from local AutoZone shop.(one box of 10 for $5)
Total coast for me was $260

If you try this guide do it on your own risk. I'm not responsible if you damage any parts of your car or electronics. It worked for me after few hours of researching and testing and I'm pleased I did it. It may not work on different models or years, I only done it on my X5. It may look long and complicated process but all you have to do is add 2 additional wires and connect them to the right place.

The DIY step by step:

The only tool you will need is a very small flathead screwdriver and no coding required.
Disconnecting your battery may be a good a idea however i did not do it.

Make sure your hands are clean

1.Remove/split the cover (two plastic side panels of your original mirror by pressing the bottom part right in the middle).
2. Unplug connector and very careful twist the mirror itself counter-clock/towards the passenger seat area about 45 degrease . Do not push agains the windshield, you can find a video about it on YouTube.
3. Remove/take down the roof panel with the reading lights. This one is the easiest step off all, just stick your fingers between the celling and the panel and pull it down.
4. Next from the retrofit cable you will need only 2 wires(Green with White and the Brown). Here, you can separate this two from the others.
5. Bring the two wires through the rubber housing, I red some people using a straw in order to make it easier but in my case only two wires was no problem at all. Put the rubber hose back to where it use to be.
6. Connect/plug-in the Green and White wire to PIN 3 and the Brown wire to PIN 10 of the original connector of your mirror. You will here a click noise. Now put/install your new mirror on the windshield, start from about 45 degrees from the passenger side towards the driver side, twist it to its original position. Reconnect the connector .
7. Unplug the connector with the 20 PINs from the roof panel and dissemble it by spreading gently the black part and pushing the grey one out.
8. Connect/plug-in the other end of Green and White wire to PIN4 of the connector, resemble it and plug it back to its place.
9. Tap the other end of the Brown wire to the brown wire from the connector with 4 PINs (the small one from the roof panel) by using a wire clip.
10. Perform a quick test of all the mirror’s functions: compass, garage door opener, Auto-dim and alarm led light. Put back the roof panel and the two piece mirror covering back.

To adjust and calibrate the compass:
Step 1: To calibrate the compass rear-view mirror C:
- Switch on the ignition.
- If “C” does not appear on the display, press the adjusting knob (1) on the underside of compass rear-view mirror C for 6-7 seconds. “C” will then appear on the display.
- Drive in a circle (at least 360°) at a maximum speed of 7 km/h until a direction is shown on the display.
- The compass is now ready for use.
Step 2: To adjust the compass zone:
- Press the adjustment knob (1) for 3-4 seconds. A number will be shown on the display.
To change the zone setting, press the adjustment knob (1) until the required zone appears in the display (see world maps below with compass zones).
- The compass will be ready for use again after approx. 10 seconds.
The factory setting for the compass zone is 8.

To program home link:
First remove old codes if any by pressing buttons 1 and 3 at same time for about a minute till small led light start flashing rapidly.
Push your original garage door opener and button on the mirror at same time till the small led light start blinking rapidly.
If it dos not work use your garage door instruction manual to add a new device/ remote control.

To test Auto-dim:
Turn car lights on and point a flash light at the mirror.

To test the alarm light:
Close doors and turn alarm on, the red clown nose will flash once and every second after that.

Very nice! Why didn't you consider retrofitting the mirror with FLA (Automatic highbeams) as well

Got it. FLA = Autobeam. My guess is probably hard to find a used one.

This worked great! Thank you so much for posting! I have the 2010 E70d and was able to do this for only $150 for the parts. Everything works great.
