Help! New X6 in Prod. Need to decide on 21" Rims
Hi all. I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself and get some quality opinions on 21" wheels.
I've ordered my 2012 X6 50i: BlkSM with Bamboo trim and Chateau Nevada Leather. Sport package, premium, premium sound, tech, and running boards. Black grills. I took the standard 19" wheel option with the intention to buy some BMW OEM 21" wheels. I found out yesterday that mine is status 112 and I need to make a decision before it gets here. As I understand it, I only have 3 options: Black, Ferric Grey, or Performance. Unfortunately I have seen none of these in person. I have used google image search engine and looked at pictures on here, but this is difficult to tell based on pictures and the available lighting at the time of the picture. I would love comments from everyone who has seen any of these and their like/dislikes of the wheels. Normally I would go with black, but I don't like it as well as I thought I would (like it better with Red or White). I'm leaning to towards the ferric grey, as the only picture of the performance wheels look a little busy. Thanks in advance. Michael |

I vote for either star-spoke or ferric.
I think some contrast looks nice. Lighter-colored wheels not only highlight the nice proportions of the car's short overhangs, but also emphasize the low-profile sidewalls (high rim-to-tire ratio) if that's the look you're going for. regardless, your X sounds sweet. So I got the text today!!!! My baby is in production. I have two weeks to go. Now I have to make a decision. New points to add to the conversation.
Spoke with the Sales Manager and the Service Manager. They both directed to a man in town that has an X5 with 215 black rims. He works a job similar to mine (lots of varied shift work) and his rims look dirty as much of the time as not. After seeing the rims dirty, I realized I don't want to go straight black. I also have no interest at this time persuing the work required to "murder" out my new baby. That leaves me with 2 options. Ferric Grey or the Performance Wheels. I've looked at both and have thoroughly browsed this forum, bimmerfest, xoutpost, and roadfly for pictures. I'll admit the performance wheels are growing on me. They are suppose to be lighter and at least one person posted here that he thought the lightned load equaled quicker acceleration??? Anyone else have thoughts on that? The complex nature may be difficult to clean, can anyone who owns some comment on that? Thanks again for all of you have helped me in my ordering process. Michael |

What about the M wheels? I believe they are somewhat lighter too. The 20 inch size would give you more tire options later on, but I do admit the wider 21 inch tires would look cool too. Have you checked the cost of replacement 21 inch tires?

Replacements are expensive, about 1800, and they are only rated for 10,000 miles, but I will only run them from March to October and my drive to work is about 6 miles.
I plan to start saving day one. Well I decided to go with the performance set. They were 700 dollars less than the ferric grey and that savings buys a lot of car washes/tire replacement fund. Will post when she gets here. |
