A difference of only 0.25 - 0.50" in total rolling diameter can result in a 10-20 rev per mile difference, which will almost certainly shorten the life of your xDrive.

It's also good to keep in mind that tire sizing is nominal - IE a 275 Pirelli summer tire is not necessarily equal to a 275 Pirelli winter tire. You most definitely need to look at the total diameter or revs per mile when installing non-OE tires.
in that case.. alot of peoples winter tire set up must be hurting there x drive?? curious as we all know BMW dealers sells alot of there M square set up and not the standard staggered set up. i'm running oem standard winter set up. but i see almost every other X5/X6 Running the smaller square tires. would that affect the x drive also?

A square setup is fine, since the front/rear tires will be the exact same size. This won't affect your xDrive, but it could affect the accuracy of your speedometer if you go larger or smaller in diameter than stock.

Staggered setups are trickier since you're trying to get a matched diameter with two different tire widths. Since the sidewall number is not a fixed size, but a percentage of the tire width, there is really only one (maybe two) combos per wheel size that will match.
