X5 M Fog Light Retrofit From NON X5 M

The X5 M lights are great. However, I'm looking to add a set of Fog lights for more light on our off-road drives through the forest at night.

I would like to use the factory fog light switch control for the regular X5, of which I was told I could use because the wiring is there already. I was also told that a Fuse needed to be installed in the Fog light switch location along with it being coded in.

Also needed is the wiring harness that connects to each light that connects to either a tap or fuse box. That Im not sure about, but I was told this could be done, because the non M X5 can be optioned with fog lights

I know I can hook up my own switch and fuse to the fogs, but I wanted to keep it OEM looking as possible and if most of the stuff is there then why not.

Am I right that this can be done? or am I wasting my time?

Hopefully, someone can help me out with this.

Thank you all again!

TJ

I was thinking of doing something similar, I was thinking of some LED lights behind the grill so they can't be seen and getting the OEM switch. I have done this on several other vehicles but never a BMW. What you described is what I assume you would do, get the switch, fuse and code it to work.

I wonder why the M didn't have the fog light option...seems like that's the only thing missing from the X5M...I guess BMW didn't consider that some people would have to drive the M in foggy areas.

Lack of fog lights is traditional M styling...personally I wouldn't add them.

That's odd that E30 and e46 m3s have fog lights I am not overly familiar with E39 M5s but I think it was an option for them as well. So much for tradition I guess

Air flow

It was my understanding that the reason that there are no fog lights is to not block the air flow to the turbo coolers.

Although, I would like to get them on mine.

Also, my 04 m3 has fog lights oem.

2011 BMW X5  [10.00]
BMW added fog lights in F86 as for E70 M there are none, looks better but defiantly lucking in visibility when foggy
I also experienced it few times which reminded me of my 2011 X5 35i which had fog lights as standard equipment

Fog lights could be very useful, maybe a slim led strip in a 3K color at the top of the bumper intake grills?

After many of us swap up to whiter halo led's, and better bulbs like the CBI in our HID's, even more so. I know I can't see as well in foggy/ snowy conditions as I would like.
