Am I the only one thinking that someone may be conspiring against Mr. Spira?!
If no one is trying to kill him then I would say definitely after market mods.

The car was serviced at Center BMW in Sherman Oaks, CA from October 25th - November 2nd for an engine malfunction. The dealer and BMW NA decided to replace all eight (8) fuel injectors as well as other fixes. I picked the car up on the evening of November 2nd and barely drove the car. The next day, November 3rd, was when the fire occurred. And it happened just like I said. Both my kids were in the car - we had only 15 seconds to get out prior to the passenger compartment having been engulfed in flames. It was absolutely insane.

And what the hell do a set of HRE's have to do with the engine catching on fire and exploding?

And yes, their was a large warning indicator that was all across my windshield on my HUD. Never seen it before.

And the passenger's door would not open and I had to drag my daughter out my side of the car. My 9 year old son, who was sitting behind me, got out very quickly. I burned my hand as I got out of the car as the flames were already sweeping past the driver's door.

You think this is a joke? Not a joke to me and my family.

Although, I do have to admit, the Domino's guy driving past the car engulfed in flames - would be funny if it were not so absolutely stupid.

What terrible events! What type of malfunction did the service center say you experienced that ultimately required all 8 fuel injectors to be replaced? Do you have any aftermarket software or other engine mods? Just curious as a lot of us like to personalize our cars. Glad to hear you all escaped!

This probably from the compartment fires they recalled that caused this fire. I had an 2010 X6M, it got lemmon lawed and I had it for 10 months and it was in the shop for 3 months. one Issue of the recall was the fuel pump and a pump that goes to the turbo or something that was causing sparks and caused fires that they fixed on my car. probably this car had those problems.

Wow I had my X6M 2010 got its 8 fuel injectors replaced because it had a lag start and black smoke coming from the exhaust.. Thank god this did not happen to my X6M. but my X6M ended up getting lemon lawed regardless because it had too many problems, It was in the shop 3 months out of the 10 months I had it.

Angry

I just had the worst experience with my 2012 X6M, my car was set on fire, after fuel injectors replacement, done at a dealership.
Since new, i experienced problems with engine light, power loss and engine entering safe mode. after thousands spent in replacements, some covered by warranty and some not, they said a campaign was open for my car and i should go for a fuel injectors replacement. 30 days of parts waiting time and my car finally was ready for a test drive. A phone call at the end of the day saying that my car was totaled by fire ended this story.
has been more than 70 days and BMW Brasil is incapable of giving me a feedback. next wed is my final deadline to receive a feedback, after this, no other way if not moving a lawsuit against the dealership and BMW Brasil.Has anyone gone trough this experience besides Mr Spira? How BMW is dealing with it?

Hopefully this is a one-off and I am glad that no one was seriously injured.
A car is just a car.

BMW's engineers and forensic department will extensively look over the car as per all BMW high profile incidents. BMW are not supportive of the Aftermarket which is why if you have a BMW with aftermarket work extensively altering the car they void your warranty. Far too often the customer is left out in the cold by being told that its BMW's fault. I know someone who works with these claims and they say every one is rejected if found to have extensive aftermarket work done.

But as a side effect BMW's Rolls-Royce division has now banned tuners from touching their cars.

I would think their lawyers would invoke Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act to fight it. In this case not sure how they would determine the fire was caused by aftermarket considering the extensive damage. They might be able to prove a tune was done but not sure how you would prove tune caused fire.

"According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty of your vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part was the cause of or contributed to the failure of the vehicle"

The POP is likely a Piezoelectric fuel injector blowing out its ball pintle, while DFI ignition process lit everything up. Its deffo fuel-related.

Guys, religiously run a PEA-based fuel and injector cleaner. I recommend keeping a gallon of Lucas Fuel System Cleaner handy. Below is what happens after only TWO TANKFULS of ARCO 91 Octane "Top Tier" gasoline. Can you say "Reduced Power....":

My 2010 X5M spontaneously combusted just before Christmas, had 90000km in perfect condition, AA tuned..I was gutted. BMW recalled many vehicles for bad PCV heaters and heater modules, mine was one of them but it still caught fire.
Fortunately I found a 2012 with only 45000km that is like brand new, had to buy another AA tune but they gave me a courtesy discount.
Apparently it is a known issue with certain years of X5's but BMW are in denial.

Inside of my tool shed was completely gutted too, $35K just in contents
