X6M new brakes... Damn

After 110k miles, the front brakes have been pulsing and are down to 6mm.

The local BMW dealership quoted $1,600 for new pads and rotors. Before I do that, would you have thoughts and comments on if I should use the ones provided by the dealership, or hunt elsewhere.

The SA told me that I could bring in pads purchased elsewhere, so that's why I wanted to ask you experts for your opinion.

Many thanks.

Gosh, do you like never stop or something? Perhaps not with an X6M. I'd be on at least my 2nd set at 110k and be needing my 3rd.

I've managed to have them changed inside of warranty since my E53 X5. I had to change those out 2x myself. Hefty work compared to a Volvo. Phew!

If my dad and I could do it on my E53, I'd definitely try it on my X6 or at least let a 3rd party shop do it. I would never attempt an X6M myself. However, I would take it to a 3rd party BMW shop if you have recommendations. Not brake check.

I decided to not mess around and just go to the BMW dealership here in Ann Arbor. $1600. Yuck.

I think that I have been far too easy on my vehicle... One set of brakes over 110k miles. I plan on trading it in next summer and promise to do my very best to wear them out!!!!

Thanks for the feedback.

FAR TO EASY! I would be on my third set by that time as well. Do a few more launch modes or something lol. You might have one of the highest mile Ms out there.

So...my the group is basically calling me a pussy because of only having gone through only one set of brakes in 110k miles.

I will gladly accept that as a challenge as I have the new brakes and plan on keeping this car for one more year before I trade it in.

I hereby promise to beat the holy-hell out of my 2010 BMW X6M or my man-card will be revoked.

Bring it!!!

Serious question to continue the thread... Any suggestions in properly breaking in the new rotors, pads, etc.? I don't want to cook the rotors in the first few miles.

Many thanks for the jabs. Good fun.

I'd like advice on break in too if there is any. 29k and new brakes going on all around but only rear's less than 2mm pads. I thought fronts would go first. I'll ask dealer when they are done (next week).

Google 'new brake pad rotor break in' and you'll get a whole host of information. I just read a bunch of it and ... there's a lot of different opinions out there.

I think that the last time I got new brakes they only told me "it just won't stop as good for a while". I should have known that I was supposed to be all technical about it! I'm glad I didn't google it then. Really.

Also holy sh1t nice. I hope to get that many miles on my M one day. Only at 57K right now.

Just curious any major issues along the way to 110K?

It seems like I am driving like a granny in compo then, as I am still on my first set of front pads at 50k miles...

I guess this is good as doesn't matter what i do, my mileage is still only averaging 16.5mpg

Hmm, I've got about 32K miles and the front brakes have been done already, rears are still original, but need to be done very soon...
