2011 X5M or 2015 Macan S?

I know this is not an exact comparison but this is the dilemma that I am in. I need some support from my fellow enthusiasts.

X5M always has been a dream of mine. Only concern is MPG. In order to fit into my budget I would go either finance a 2011 X5M over 7 years or a 2015 Macan S over 7 years.

With the X5M after 7 years I would have a 10 year old M with about 70k miles on it. All of the options I would want.

With the Macan S after 7 years I would a 6 year old car with about 56k miles on it. I have never driven or owner a Porsche before. The looks are stunning. I would be going without key options that I like (run flats, HUD, keyless entry) but it looks awesome and I am sure it drives that way too.

I really love the BMW brand. I have had 2 X5s and now X3. Looking at more of a long term decision at this stage. Logically the Macan makes the most sense.

What are your thoughts?

This sounds like a terrible idea either way. These are not cars you want to hold on to for a long time...

They will cost multiple thousands over 7 years to maintain. As far as the BMW it's terrible on gas as well, I can't speak for the Porsche. Once these cars are out of warranty it's quite a gamble.

I thought with the Macan I could add a warranty to it so that through the 7 yrs I would be covered for out of the ordinary stuff. The X5M seems more of a gamble like you said.

The first thing you need to do is to go and drive a Porsche. I've tried to buy one for years and every time after a test drive I've walked away disappointed. The last one, a 2013 Cayenne GTS I drove that I really wanted to like was a turn-off too. New Porsches have a "Power Steering Plus" option that the GTS had and at low speeds it felt to me like the power steering of a 1960's Impala. This comes standard on the new Macan Turbo and there is no way of deleting it from your order sheet. That alone killed the deal for me. It is an option on the S so make sure you delete it if you order one. I was also considering the Macan at one point

BTW, that GTS also had NO torque at low rpm (naturally aspirated) but the new Macan has corrected that with turbos.

On the issue of having a car out of warranty being a gamble: it's true, but it is far less expensive to buy and keep a car for 7 or more years than leasing a new car every three years which is the justification people use to make sure they never own a BMW out of warranty because of the cost of repairs. One would have to pay for $30K worth of repairs over three years to spend the equivalent amount - something possible but highly unlikely. Adding the 7 year warranty to your purchase sounds like a splendid idea to me

This. I've owned old cars, new cars, cars with warranty, cars without warranty, high performance cars with complex and expensive parts, etc, etc, etc. None of my out of warranty german cars were noteworthy with excessive repairs, with the exception of 1....a 1993 Audi 90 CS Quattro. Depreciation is a far worse enemy, and that reinforces your point...it will be experienced whether a new car is leased or purchased. Your devaluation journey in an '11 will be considerably softer than that of the original owner.

I just faced the similar dillemma. I was looking at an X5M vs a Macan or a Cayenne. What did I do? Got the 2012 X5M loaded to the hilt. It was CPO'd so have 2 years left plus one more for the CPO on it. It's my winter car now as I have '13 M5 for summer and nicer weather only. So far enjoying it much but as they say above it is not great on gas. It doesn't help I have a heavy foot and keep it in M mode most of the time.

I think between the BMW or Porsche it will come down to which one you will be happy in the most and not think about the "other" SUV you could be driving instead while you are in it.

Great story! Thanks for sharing!!! I often think that if the made an X3M I would be all over it. I like the size of X3 but yearn for more power. The Macan gives me size and performance but not a BMW. X5M has if all except MPG.

Drove every cayenne out there except turbo and ended up with X5M. Go X5M CPO and don't look back. BTW, first you need to get an allocation for the Macan and pay MSRP, two turnoffs for me right there. Macan is smaller too, and if you don't need the room go with the X6M.

Plus the Macan is based on the Audi Q5... the X3 competitor.

I say go 2012-2013 CPO X5M or a new 2014+ X5.

My story is even funnier. I had my '13 M5 and didn't want to drive it in the NJ snow and salt fest here all winter. So I needed a beater car for the winter. I took a bath on the Prius but don't miss it. Also I don't do enough miles per year for gas mileage to matter for me. Always under 3-4k per vehicle.

PIEZON - I know you said you would love an X3M but you could get an X3 with M Sport Package. Not 100% same as a pure M car but pretty close. I saw one in the showroom and considered this too but when this one '12 X5M loaded with every option and just 3500 miles came up I could not resist. Don't see that too often.

I for one really like the Macan, i think that size works well for many people including me since i don't really have any reason to get anything bigger. But what bugs me about the Macan is the options list, a loaded Macan turbo with all the little things that i want has a MSRP that's 10k higher than what i got my brand new X5M for, that makes me question why would i pick something with less power and smaller for even more money

Great story! Yes I have an X3 M sport. It's nice really like it. I may stay with it. Just wish more performance.

Yes my thoughts too! You get a lot with a loaded X5M.

Although I enjoy Porsche products, the Macan S seems a bit on the small-ish side. I understand you have an X3 now, so that might not matter that much. I don't think you can go wrong with a used X5M. I had two brand new vehicles and mentally broke down all the time out of worry for a scratch or a dent, what have you. To the point where I couldn't even really enjoy them. Then I bought a used X5 M Sport with lots of options and even though I keep it very clean, I care about it less than my previous cars. It certainly helps with the blood pressure and keeps the anxiety low.
