-=BimmerTech SmartView Wifi Mirroring=-

Big things really do come in small packages thanks to BimmerTech's SmartView technology, a plug and play device (no coding needed!) that lets you make the most of your iDrive screen. The device operates via a WiFi connection, mirroring whatever page you are viewing on your smart phone and displaying it on the iDrive. Take advantage of Google Maps navigation and guided commands channelled through your speakers without having to look at your phone. Display your photo and video library on a larger screen. You can even play games and watch movies!

How does it work?

Once the device is installed you will need to hold down a button on the iDrive Controller, steering wheel, or radio face plate (the button location varies by BMW model) to see the SmartView Welcome Screen on your iDrive display. Simply connect to the WiFi network shown on the Welcome Screen and activate AirPlay/Miracast mode on your smart device to mirror your iPhone or Android phone to your iDrive screen. It's that easy! To enable audio, your SmartView device should be plugged into the AUX port, located either in the armrest or multimedia interface harness.

What do you need?

Please verify that your smart device uses Airplay Mirroring (iOS devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, etc.) or Miracast (available in certain Android devices) wireless technology standards, which are compatible with the SmartView device.

SmartView requires a multimedia interface to connect to your iDrive. If you have already installed BimmerTech's Rear View Camera Retrofit (non OEM integration and non OEM) your system is ready to integrate SmartView. If not, you will need to add the multimedia interface option to your SmartView order. BimmerTech also offers customers that purchase SmartView with a multimedia interface the option to round out their purchase by adding the rear view and front camera easily and inexpensively.

Please note on Cars with Nav the SmartView will be displayed on the left 2/3 side of the Idrive screen as shown in this picture.

Couple of notes on above product:

Since this part of the forum is primarily for E70 X5/X5M this info could be useful for anybody thinking about adding BimmerTech to their cars!

I just wanted to add that I'm able to use SmartView in full screen mode! (just installed it this weekend), so for CIC the full view is possible!

On another note I'm not able to use my Android Note 2 phone (version 4.4.2) with SmartView for some reason I can't see SmartView on that phone but on my iPhone 6s (version 9.3.2) it works good but it took me couple of BT resets to get it to work.

Also for cars with Navigation systems (most of our cars have Navi) the multimedia unit has to be routed under the glove compartment and it’s extremely tight fit, the biggest issue is related to OEM video cable being very short and it’s hard to find a right route to make the connection happen.

As mentioned in original post to get sound out of phone there is an additional cable that needs to be routed from multimedia interface to center console AUX port which I didn’t do yet, I might or might not do it in the future because my main purpose for this retrofit was to use Waze where I don’t use sound at all!

Last but not least, I opted for BimmerTech front view camera, as I recently installed Powerdome hood and Vorsteiner front lip, having additional obstacles made it very hard to park, the camera pretty much takes care of that! Also if you already paying for multimedia interface it’s just makes sense to get additional component, this way you’ll get better price and all can be combined in one install. Once you pass the firewall the install is somewhat easy

Thanks BimmerTech!

p.s. (no there were no discounts for this post)
