What\'s a \"M\" engine?

Dealer said my X5M engine is not a true \"M\" engine. Said the M5, M3 are true \"M\" engines.

Also said a \"M\" engine requires a service at 1200 or so miles. Said engine in my X5M is better in that way.

So what is the difference?

So the fact that the next gen m5 engine is based on the x5m engine will make the next gen m5 engine a non true M engine.
Your dealer is retarded, your x5m engine is a real M engine.

All new model M cars do not require the 1200 miles service.

He means that a true M engine is naturally aspirated.. No turbos. Traditionally the M divisions' mission statement was pump out power without the use of forced induction. They were purists. This changed with the new head of BMWs M division.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think he was right. Makes you wonder what else they don't know when servicing your vehicle.

Another definition of a true ///M motor is one designed from the ground up by ///M. The X5M, X6M and now M5 share the regular production 4.4 block, etc. Same with the 1M sharing the Z4 35is, 335is engine. I think the only prior ///M car with a regular production motor was the US motor for the '95-'99 M3 but it still had a unique build (bore, stroke, intake, exhaust, etc) not found on any regular production BMW.

Isn't the dealer kinda right? Don't see why there is really any reason to hate, besides the fact some might not personally like that statement, as the want to feel "special" to....just saying...

He was kinda right lol it's not a traditional ///M engine. Typically ///M cars have their own engine not shared with any other non ///M model and they were until now, strictly naturally aspirated. It cause a little controversy when they introduced the current engines and I think some people are still sour about it. I personally don't have a problem with it. Alpine has been using forced induction for years and their engines run great. I loved my B7

The only problem was he said the M5, M3 have true "M" engines, unlike the X5M engine

As of right now they both do. M3 has a naturally aspirated v8 and the last M5 had a naturally aspirated V10. Both engines were/are only available on ///M models (M3, M5, M6). The new M's will have the new engine platforms.
IMO he shouldn't of said they aren't "real" ///M engines, he should of said they aren't the "traditional" ///M engines. That statement would of been more appropriate.
