Bluetooth - Yes I've searched ;-)

My 2004 X5 has a build date of 06/04. I have the sport package, nav, 6x9 screen, phone buttons on the steering wheel. When I look in the literature it talks about a BMW mobile phone and inserting it "somewhere" (i can't tell by the pics). Unless I'm reading the wrong book, I don't see anything about pairing my phone to it. Does my head unit support that function? If not, is it possible to just buy the head unit that does and do a simple install? I've installed my own stereos for some 20 years now but I'm unfamilier with the BMW. I can tell you this....installing a whole new system in an Audi SUCKS!!! LOL.

If you're willing to spend money, BMW dealer is your best friend. Blue Tooth, mobile phone slot, whatever you name it.

I guess what I'm asking is if the current head unit that I have support bluetooth for my phone. If not, then I can just go aftermarket. I used the navigation yesterday and it sucks. Then again, maybe I just didn't know how to use it.....lol.

Depending on if your car has BMW assist, you would just need to replace the TCU (telemetry control unit) with a newer part number. 2004 was a odd year with BMW claiming cars getting Bluetooth but in the end they didn't. Didn't get into cars until sep 04.

Should be able to find a used one on eBay. If its enabled and you don't care about assist it should be just plug and play. If you care about assist you would need to recode the tcu with your vin#. At one point BMW offered a retrofit but perhaps they don't anymore on older cars.

To clarify Bluetooth isn't a function of the headunit. It's a function of the TCU.

Ahhhhh.....ok. Thanks. I do have BMW assist. That is if its the little button up on the roof center console with a wrench. I pressed it the other day and it tried dialing BMW but I'm not registered. There's also an SOS button. I have the talk button on the steering wheel. Don't know if that helps or not.

The car will take verbal commands from you. Let's say you go into iDrive to change the climate controls. Instead of escaping out and then navigating with the know back to the nav screen to see the perspective map, you can just push the button and say "perspective" and it will take you to the perspective map. That sort of thing. It's handy for us that don't have the newer iDrive with the 4 buttons.

With the older idrive you know you can hold the idrive controller in any of the 4 directions. In doing so it will go straight from entertainment to nav (whatever last screen you were in for that category) for example.

Essentially does the same thing as the four buttons they put on the new controller !
