X5m power steering fluid leak
Hey guys,
I have a 2010 x5m, 112k miles. I was hogging on the car today with many high rpm blasts. All of a sudden, the power steering reservoir evacuated itself of fluid. Spent five hours working on it and have found no leaks, aside from an over pressure in the system which results in fluid overflowing and exiting out the top of the reservoir after 4k rpm engine speed. Any thoughts? Thanks, |

Sounds like you pump is cavitating. Mine did the same thing. Do you have the power steering whine? If so it's time to replace it.

It does groan as of last night. The biggest issue is the froth coming out the top of reservoir cap from over pressure.
The car never had this issue before, but I did about an hour of high rpm driving on a backroad so I suppose that could have done it in. I have done the same type of driving with my x6m and have never had an issue, but that has 32k on it, so the pump just may be old and worn out

I have a 2010 x5m and the dealer couldn't figure it out. Till one technician bleed the whole hydro system and replaced the pump. All turned out well but my thoughts is the pump goes out early and shows to be ok but is faulty. I say this because the dealer came back three times and said the pump was fine. Till they replaced and said yes it was faulty. It's very common in the X5M. Wish BMW would call it a recall, I talked with BMW North America LLC and they paid for 75 percent which is better than nothing
