Auto Hold

I drive an e70 x5 4.8L 2010 and i was just wondering if using the auto hold alot will damage the electronic parking brake because i live in a crowded city and Auto H is my best friend and im afraid it will damage the parking brake overtime. Any info ?

Cause damage? No.

Increased wear? Yes.

I would still keep using it. You're going to have to do brakes eventually anyways.

Some may argue using the e-brake will help it last longer as it keeps the cables moving, sometimes rust builds up inside the cable if they're not used very much, at least on manual cars I've owned.

If the Auto-H on the e70 is designed the same way it is on the F series BMWs...then they utilize the hydraulic brakes (DSC) while the car is moving and engine is running. The electronic parking brake is then applied when the car comes to a standstill.

Below is some info from a thread from a few weeks ago about this topic on another forum:

See the info highlighted in yellow for both the Parking and Auto Hold features...and both mention DSC brakes (front/rear axle) while car is in motion...then when car is at standstill (green highlights) both systems revert to the rear axle parking brake:

Yeah...I had no clue that the P-brake & Auto-H functioned this way until I looked it up in the TIS.
