Biff, that horrible lag and being in 6th gear by 40 is EXACTLY how you get 20 mpg.
My Porsche 911 has the PDK tranny and I leave it OUT of sport mode its in 7th gear by 35 mph, thats how they get up to 30mpg in a 400 HP car. If I put it in sport or sport plus and stomping on the pedal puts me in 16 mpg.

im sorry if i came across asthough i was disputing ur integrity or doubting ur claims, thats not the case at all...was just trying to express me astonishment! lol. but i think if u download the bimmerpost app to ur iphone u can then upload pids to the site from that, as i have no yet tried to do it i cant confirm it tho. anyhow no need for the "proof pics". and thanks paul i guess ill stick to my 12mpg ave because driving theese out of sport mode is no fun at all, and i didnt buy this this for fuel economy.

Biff I think PaulGT3 is right. "Lugging" can gobble gas not to mention stress the engine components.
This weekend I went down south and back on 101 with my '12 X5M (5800 miles on it). I "took one for the team" and tested average mpg for 227 miles each way (ie over a relatively long haul) and came up with an AVERAGE mpg at an AVERAGE 60mph of over over 19 mpg for the full 227 miles going south and on the way back (in less traffic) at an average 70 mph came up with an AVERAGE mpg of 17 mpg. Didnt use the "M" button and didnt "Grisselize" but did an occasional sport downshifting (eg when noting a CHP on my side of the road). I agree that use of the button and sport driving is death to mileage and have seen under 12mpg in short mpg tests . (I do Grisselize it when not commuting or testing) At north of $4.50/gal it pays to be judicious in stomping on it. The vehicle is still at kick, I think we can all agree, even at relatively mundane speeds. |

I've had my 07 4.8i just short of two weeks and am averaging 12.9mpg (mostly stop and go). My previous car was an 02 M5 which now seems like a hybrid when it comes to gas consumption. No complaints, though. Loving the machine.

I averaged 13 mpg with mostly freeway driving in about 8500 miles with my X5M. In M mode/sport in city driving I couldn't get more than 10 mpg, and with 100+ miles on my daily commute, I was filling up every other day. I don't see how it would be possible to get anywhere near 20 mpg without 2 more gears. It makes me wonder if they'll ever put the 8-speed transmission in it.

Despite my name, I actually live in South Florida now, which is as flat as flat can be.

I did some mpg tests and when I'm driving 75/25 hwy/cty I'm getting roughly 300mi to the tank. I believe if I was all highway I could squeeze 400 mi. That's driving it out of sport mode most of the time.
Surprisingly, this past weekend we had a little BMW run and I was doing some crazy runs up to 150.. Over and over.. Had it in M mode the entire time and after all was said and done I only burned a quarter tank over 42mi of driving and still got 280+ miles to the tank. |

"Gas mileage is irrelevant when you decide to buy an SUV, especially X5M with twin-turbo 4.4L engine."
This may be true, but miles between fill ups is not irrelevant. It is rare I can go over 235 miles without tempting fate. |

I'm doing 65-70 on the highway and in getting that mileage. And I get on it hard sometimes but mostly normal driving cause there's too many cars on the road during the day. |

I get a consistent 14.6 MPG with a split of suburban driving along with a ~65mph commute up and down 101 every weekday.
Eh well....550hp TT V8 shouldn't produce much better in my book. |

I just bought mine this week and have 29k miles on it now, and I'm averaging 10mpg living in San Francisco with all our hills etc, with 70% city driving with traffic, and 30% highway. I drive pretty aggressively, in M mode 95% of the time—cause that's why I bought the car, ie to have fun driving it. Still... the gas mileage is killing me. 10mpg seems low doesn't it?
