X5M rear wheel flares

Hi All,
new to the forum today.

I bought a used 2010 X5M in Jan. 30k miles.

Anyway, we've had a harsh winter here in MN. I finally washed it and was outside long enough to look around.

I was surprised to see heavy wear on the rear fender flares. there are 100's of small paint chips on each side. Is this possible that this could have occurred with 2,000 miles of hwy driving? It wasn't like this when I bought it.

I'm trying to figure out of the dealer may have painted the flares with paint that didn't hold up or what could have happened. It seriously looks like it's been following a tractor trailer on a dirt road (flares only).

I would appreciate your input on this.

Thanks!

Nope. They are prone to taking a hit from road debris. Especially from highway driving. I just changed my plastic textured ones and reapplied new clear shield on the lower door

Completely normal. Get them repainted and then put Xpel or VentureShield on there.

Are you sure it was not like that when you bought it? Because i can't imagined for 2000 miles, its just not possible imo. I had mine painted for over a year and 14k miles not much happened to it.

I brought it into the dealer on Saturday and even they said they wouldn't have sold the it that way.

I figured they would be prone to wear, but not this fast. we'll have to see what the dealer does about it.

If the dealer said that to you, it must be really bad. I agree with you, does not matter how prone, definitely not 2000 miles, certainly not normal. If you pay out of your pocket to repaint, why go to dealer?

Damn! I just had mine painted and tomorrow having the Expel ultimate put on the flares. My rocker panels at the very end are pretty spotty and I too have some spots in front of the flares on the rear door but not quite that bad from what I can tell from your pics. In 3-4 days I already have a couple tiny spots on my freshly painted flares, it is pretty ridiculous how fast this happens. I'm in Illinois not sure how different our roadways are!

Crazy!

It is unfortunately normal wear. So much so that BMW started putting clear bras right there on the newer X5M's. I would advise you to search xoutpost.com as there is a huge thread outlining this problem and the various solutions. They even have a graph of the hardest hit areas and everything.

yep normal. not much you can do other than get repainted. dealer may have polished to make it less noticable b/c that's a lot of wear for 2k miles. i wouldn't trust them

That's one mistake BMW didn't make with the new X5s...

I'm having mine repainted and protection applied soon after.

How does things look once stone chips accumulate up on the film? is it less noticeable on film as it is on paint only? or does the debris tend to have very little chance of penetrating the film altogether?

This is a little trick that I incorporated to help prevent the excessive road chipping. A very simple plain Jane mud flap that i resized and then affixed by using the two existing pop rivet hole locations.
