Importing Music Question
How many GB in the 2010 X6 can be used for music?
Can I burn 700mb of MP3's on a disc and import them all or do I have to import audio cd's only? It also states that I can import from USB. Does this mean iPhone/iPod or USB thumb-drive? Thanks!

This is for old idrive system (pre 2010) so if it's different for new one someone can chime in.
You don't import any. you can burn songs to mp3 disc and use that in the dvd player, you can burn songs onto a thumb drive and plug it into the usb port in the center console or you can burn them on to ipod of any flavor (I have nano) and plug that via y-cable into the usb port and another port located in center console. center console ones are accessed as play lists via AUX. |

I have a X6 without the premium sound system. I checked the other day with BMW dealership and they told me that there are two kits. I forgot the names of the kits, but one is for the aux port in the arm rest (you do not have control of the songs in xdrive) and the other kit is to connect the ipod directly to the USB port (you do have control of the songs in the xdrive). The service advisor told me the price of a little less than 1,000 dollars and I said that I will just use the thumb drive and load my songs into the hard drive. Most of the cost is labor he said. There is a lot of programming involved. That is what he said. You can load the songs without these kits by using a thumb drive as the reply stated above. The USB port is standard and is located in the glove box on the left hand side, does not matter if you have the standard or premium sound system.

I did not load any songs yet, but I tried earlier to connect my ipod to the usb port and nothing happened. The system did not recognize the ipod. Either today or tommorow I will try and load songs via a thumb drive. I will let you know if it works, but I refuse to pay to connect my ipod.

Is it possible to import iTunes playlists?
Not iTunes Store downloaded song. Rather burnt cd's to mp3's. I hope I do not have to make playlists with the iDrive Controller.

I'm sorry it took an extra day to get back to you. It is not easy. I tried converting AAC iTunes files to MP3 that was a challenge. When I was able to get the files converted I transferred them to the xdrive via the USB port (thumb drive). I did not hear anything, but the system recognized the songs. I then tried a different route. I then tried to copy all of my iTunes songs unconverted to two DVD's and then upload them to the xdrive. It could not be easier, until I notice that I only had about 286 out of 954 songs that actually uploaded. The system would not recognize the songs with the copy protection feature. Somehow you have to get around the copy protection feature. I'm working on that. Copying them to the DVD as a data file is the best way because you also get everything that is associated with the song, e.g. genre. You might want to view this link: http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/07/04/up...d-information/. I think that once you get the bulk of your songs to your xdrive all you will need to do is update the new songs on your iTunes to a cd or dvd every so often. I'll keep you posted. Another note, I notice that when I created playlist on a CD the system had no problems saving to the xdrive and I am sure that some of those songs had the copy protection feature on them.

It is frustrating and involves some work to get the music to play. I just finished downloading all the DVD and now the songs will not play. I'm through. The only thing that works I know for sure is creating a playlist and saving it to the HD. No issues with that.
It may be worth paying a fee for an aftermarket ipod connection at BMW if you listen to your iPod a lot. I would not pay for an upgraded system. That is just my opinion. The standard system is ok. |

Thanks for the update & link. I guess I will have to burn my Protected iTunes files to audio cd then back to iTunes. That is really lame. The one problem I have with always connecting my iPhone to the USB in the car is the wear and tear on the iphone battery always plugging it in to charge 2-3 times a day. I guess I could purchase a new iPod just for the car. I could always leave it attached. Might be the easiest way...

New Question:
Can I play my protected ACC iTunes files from an iPod Nano using the USB cable? I just bought a 16GB Nano, complete with
BMW X6 xDrive 50i engraving, to be used in my X6. BUT...I have 3000 purchased iTunes songs. Can I play them through the USB?
