Black roof rails?

Has anyone swapped out the aluminum roof rails that are part of the M Sport package for the high-gloss black roof rails on the X5M? Is it even possible? I have a carbon black 5.0 on order and I'm concerned that the aluminum rails might clash with an all black vehicle. Any thoughts?

Should work because both are flushed rails, I think.

Yes it is possible. Just need to remove headliner for removal and install.

I found them on the BMWUSA website. It's about $600 for both rails plus installation if done by the dealer. Pricier than I hoped. I wonder if I could just get them vinyl wrapped and if it would be cheaper.

Wait till it gets to you and then decide. I have a Carbon Black with M-Sport and the aluminum roof rails. I don't think it looks bad.

I think itll look fine also, but it can be wrapped too or taken off and powder coated for like $200. Let me know if you want some prices for powdercoating, and i can try to find out.

Beamer - When were you at woodbridge mall, and who's white X5M? lol

Met a bunch of X5 guys from xoutpost on the 17th to do some coding. Went over to see the i8 and i3 concept cars in Manhattan afterwards.

Nice, what did you have coded in and who did the coding? I'm not on that forum, maybe I'll sign up today.

I realize that colors, materials, options, and the cars themselves are all a matter of personal taste. I think the Q5 is a good looking vehicle. Same with the MDX and RDX and many others. This time around I wanted the BMW X3 and since I bought one I'm looking forward to driving it around since it drives better than any other SUV out there in many people's opinions including my own. I think it's a great looking vehicle and has terrific technology. That said I'm a little bit concerned after driving "Bullet Proof" Japanese vehcicles for many years that this X3 may have reliability issues. I really don't want to have too close a relationship with the BMW service people even though they'd be paying for issues. My time is too valuable to me.

Which brings me to the Roof Rails. The sales guy mistakenly ordered our X3 with Aluminum Roof Rails. My wife and I hate that look so much we made them order us a new X3. I'm not sure why someone would want to draw attention to them, but like I stated it's a matter of taste. With a black or dark color car the first thing that you'd notice would be the Aluminum Roof Rails- Deep Sea Blue is our color. They're big and bright and stand out over the body of the car. With a silver or light colored car- not as much. Just one man's opinion.

Reading this I thought "sweet what a great idea!!" then I realized I have black rails already. If I were a bit taller, I probably would've noticed my rails about umm a year ago.

I am actually hoping to remove our rails altogether for a clean look. Saw one the other day and really like it. Anyone done it themselves? If not how much did the dealer charge?

Just something to chew on fellas and ladies too..

Ask your local body shop if they can do the install or removal. Remember good collision shops fix and install stuff all day. They don't take it to a dealer and guess what? Their rates are much cheaper per hour as well. They are more careful because it is what they do all day long. They know how to fix things on your car/suv.

Many shops in my area are $35-$42 an hour compared to $100 - $145 per hour at the service shop. You can do the math.

It does not take 8 hours to remove the rails. If you are doing it according to the book perhaps. It can be done in less than 2 hours. I should know they replaced my rails for my under warranty and they get to bill for 8 hours but the guys know how to remove and install in two hours. Don't remove the entire headliner just unbolt and loosen.

People forget about these guys at the collision centers because we think of them only for paint/body repair. Many of the high end shops have mechanics as well and remember they fix major collision. They know more than the Service Techs I can tell you that right now when it comes to assembly and reassembly of parts.

Try it out you will thank me later.

FYI - My collision center can install springs and coilovers as well No alignments or "corner balancing"

RAJG - if you are not liking the look after your SAV arrives try plastic dip first. They have some new stuff that has a gloss to it built in. It comes off easy enough too. Try that first. It will cost you maybe $20 - $30 to see if you like it. Many people are doing their wheels and some are even painting their cars in plastidip.
