2007 X5 blown engine 34k miles

So a couple weeks ago my wife's 2007 BMW X5 died in the middle of the road. After a couple weeks of assessment by the BMW dealer, we have been informed that the engine was completely blown and needs to be replaced. This is a $20,000 job, which is right around the current value of the car.

I talked to our SA and he said the timing chain was completely off the rails, and had put a hole into the engines. They are not sure what happened exactly, possibly something in the VANOS system caused the timing to get off, which messed up the pistons hitting something else and jumping the timing chain off the tracks. There was no indication of a timing issue prior to this, so it was just a catostrophic failure.

Unfortunately, the car is a couple years out of warranty. We were able to get in contact with someone who will purchase the car for $8,000 as is, since he will probably tear down the engine and try to fix it himself.

I would like to get your opinions on this. It seems like extremely low mileage for such catostrophic damage. My wife is the original owner and has kept up on all the maintenance. The last few months we have been having issues with the car starting, and replaced a fuel pump (which wasnt the issue) and the fuel pump relay (which seemed to fix the issue). Other than that the car is in great shape.

Do we have any options with BMW NA? I would like to get an idea before we sell the car to a third party. I can't think of anything else.

Why not purchase a used engine from http://www.car-part.com

Find a recycler, purchase the engine and have an indy mechanic do the swap

If my 2013 X5M engine is still good to go after my roll over, I can sell it to you...

^^ I saw your accident, if you are parting out, I'll take your front calipers and rotors. I didn't want to seem like a vulture by PM'ing you right after your accident.

Are you buying your car back from the insurance company? Not that I need any parts, just curious. Seemed like a really bad accident.

Thanks for the offer, and for the advice Blue.

We ended up getting a couple offers for the car and sold it as is for $9,000. The guy who bought it plans to tear apart the engine and see if it can be repaired. He'll probably either rebuild the engine or out a new one in. Not happy about the loss, but at least we made something on it. Bluebook for trade-in is only 17k anyways. Going to look for a new SUV this weekend. My wife is understandly upset with BMW now so we are looking at lexus. We will see what happens.

There are some 30k engines for 4500.00. Might have been cheaper to go that route.

8k seems expensive to replace an i6 or v8. I got quoted 9k for my s85 m6 v10 replacement and 1 yr warranty
