Will I be sorry if I don't order x6 5.0i?
Well,
I'm a few mos early before i was ready to order.. my lease on my 335i expires in April... but ooh the deals are really available now with BMW hurting for end of year sales and their incentives.. I'm thinking about ordering an x6 3.5i... maybe add the performance package for a little edge... I know I can afford that (I want to purchase not lease).. BUT having never driven the 5.0i, it's tempting to consider going for it and ordering the 5.0i... budget be damned! anybody else in the same boat?.. happy with the performance of the 3.5i and not wanting to go over budget with the 5.0.. any regrets?.. happipness? |

There's a pretty big performance difference between the two models, and you will notice it if you're coming from a 335i. I traded my 335i convertible for the xDrive 35i, and now I'm wishing I had sacrificed some options for the bigger engine. At first it was fine because everything was new, different and exciting. But now I'm lusting after the power I'm missing and seriously considering a trade up to the 50i. Drive both before you decide.

To thyself be true
if ur driving mostly in urban area, without a lot of highway/ramp traffic & ur not racing every porsche to the next traffic light, & u don't drive leadfooted & u hate to have to gas up every 3-4 days, then 3.5i is more than "sufficient".
"Power corrupts absolutely", if u get 5.0i, it's faster by 1+ seconds to 60mph, it's front heavier, handles slightly different,, but will win u a lot of street races & some police commendations, consequently higher insurance & more gas stops. If ur young & single, get the 5.0i, if ur more mature, perhaps w/family & nothing to prove, get the 3.5i. If u've won the lottery, or Granny left u a huge inheritance, get x5M or X6M! Whichever u get make sure u get adaptive drive. |

Did any of you'll.. yes I'm from the South... also feel like you were still able to get enough utility.. cubic ft wise, it should be 14 ft bigger than my 335i... although we have no children.. you do want to feel like you have that extra space in the trunk when needed.. otherwise buy a sedan..
Thanks |

Go with the 5.0 if you can, if you are questioning it now, you will be questioning most likely forever.
You get a lot more car and it's well worth it. I love mine & I got the performance upgrade as well. This car is too aggressive looking to be underpowered! If you do it you never look back once you drive it.

I totally agree with scottyv...go for the 50i, you won't regret it. However, i'm not sure about your budget flexibility. But you can compensate some of the difference by taking off a few options, except for Adaptive drive...it's a must. It makes a huge difference in terms of handling.

Just about made up my mine
Well,
For others thinking about an X6 and the 5.0 vs. 3.5i a few observations.. The 3.5i is definitely sufficient..but carefully comparing it to my current 335i it has the same exhaust sound but of course needs to run at a higher RPM to get going.. it can get going but you need to push it a little more.. not bad but just noticeable Although I didn't drive the 5.0i, I did drive the same engine in the 550GT and the thrust/pulling power is very obvious along with the V8 sound.. There is definitely a lot more storage space in the cargo area vs. my 335i and likely still more than even the new 5 series looking at the photos.. perfect for a weekend getaway for 4 or taking a large load for 2 on a long road trip.. Handling passenger space are fine for me and my wife.. as long as your rear seat passengers aren't much over 6 ft... headroom is OK.. Probably will settle on the 5.0i.. as I'm getting a really good deal on both considering usual retail pricing... |

Deals..
I started on the BMW webpage requesting quotes from dealers in my area..
The best 2 deals were.. BELOW CURRENT invoice... meaning look up your options with wholesale pricing on KBB.COM.. then incentives would take an ADDITIONAL $2500 off of that so at that point I was $2500 below CURRENT NON INCENTIVE INVOICING.. then both dealers tacked on about $2000 bucks including whatever training/MACO fees each dealer may need to recover... saving about $7-8K off of full retail pricing on either model.. I feel CONFIDENT if you check around the large volume dealers in your area you can get the same.. |

I think it's a great price your getting. I say, go for it.
ABout the I6 vs V8 debate, think about it. Do you need all that power or not?? I say go with a V8 but what does your financial situation say?

Performance is subjective. I've got an 09 3.5. I put a Burger Juice Box in it with Stage 4. The car feels like it's better and, to an extent, like it has a small V8 in it. I just did a 230 mile expressway drive yesterday pushing 80mph most of the way. Computer showed 20.8 mpg, get about 17 around town. The Juice Box, some claim, increased my HP by about 60-80. Regardless, it helped and made the car a better machine. Good luck.

It will always be the little things that will remind you, I should've got the 5.0, for instance the exhaust tips, the rumble from the v8, and the look you'll get from a 5.0 owner (nice car little guy).

I would say this decision really depends on a couple factors. Firstly, your financial situation. Does the 50i put more strain on you or does it not even make a difference. Secondly, how much do you care about speed? When I drove the 35i I felt it was more than enough for daily driving (the 35i has almost the same power to weight ratio as the 328xi sedan and a better power to weight ratio than the Audi A4 2.0T). Thirdly, is the X6 your only car? / Do you have a fun weekend car?
For me, it was a combination of all three of the above factors. (I have not ordered an X6 yet but hopefully next spring.) I have a E46 Competition M3 that I love with only 21k miles that I plan on keeping as my weekend/fun car. So most importantly, whenever I have the need for a little more performance I can just drive the M. Also, I do a lot of driving on highways and think the better gas mileage of the 35i is a plus. Financially, I would rather have the additional cash to put towards some fun mods for the M3 considering I wouldn't really be utilizing the extra performance of the V8. The 50i is a great car, and if I didn't have the M3 I would definitely be all over one or maybe even the X6M. Last edited by Rac10000; 12-04-2009 at 03:48 PM.. |

Until about a year ago I owned a Mercedes E-55 AMG with some Kleeman mods boosting it to 565 HP, 460 at rear wheels, dynoed. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as having too much HP. Conversely, I owned the car for 3.5 years and found myself never driving it because I wanted to "save" it. Sold it with 18000 miles on it. As I posted earlier my 3.5 has a Burger juice box in it, probably putting out 350-370 HP now. Today I jumped on it hard, hadn't done it in a while, A/C was off and it's cooling off now. Was about 57F here today. Except for the first 50 feet or so the car really goes. The old cliche' "half the fun is getting there" may apply to the 3.5. It's a little bit of a challenge to see what one can get out of it. I may be taking the car to Denver in early Jan. to let AR Design use it as a development bed to build some 3" down pipes. They claim 20 HP catted and 30 catless increases. As you may know there are none available for the X6. I've also installed a Supersprint exhaust system, pricey but at least now I can hear the exhaust......7 more HP.(?) Regardless, tinkering can be fun. If not why not just buy a M series? One more point...fuel!!!! We live in a very unusual time. There are those that are convinced gas will be $7.00 a gallon in about a year. Also supply may very well become an issue. MPG may become a driving factor in ALL our lives.

gosh... just reading the pros and cons can really give you a headache.
i'm going through the same challenges... i'm looking to purchase a 2010 X6 but keep going back and forth on the TT6 vs TT8... i am coming from an 08 X5 3.0si and i everytime i'm on a highway ramp or completing a turn i always wish i had opt for the V8... the six is great when it catches up and fun to drive but no tough sound and pick is weak.. in come the X6...futuristic styling... and similar challenges... can you get by with the TT6, yes... would you wish you had the TT8 on multiple occassions? I believe so, if you are heavy footed and love the extra excitement... is it practical if you have wife, kids in the back, and spend most of your time going back and forth to supermarket? not in this case... I compared both models with similar options and it comes out to about 8k over the TT6.. still "doable" |
