Aluminum X6M to X5M "powerdome" hood project
I finally pulled the trigger and ordered an aluminum X6M "powerdome" hood for my 2011 X5M!
Hood and accessories arrived this morning and were delivered to the paint shop . They can't get to it until next week, but I snapped a teaser pic of the new hood in it's box when I inspected it at the dealers. Can't see the "powerdome" part in the pic, sorry about that, I snapped the pic as they were boxing it back up to load it on the truck for delivery to the paint shop! They were in a hurry to finish loading everything and get going, so I didn't have time to get any more shots. Also, the new hood is noticeably lighter when compared to the original hood. Obviously won't make a huge difference with a 5300 lb vehicle, but every little bit helps! I'll try to get some pics while it's at the paint shop before, during and after color matching and installation and then get them posted. They estimate it will take around three days to complete once they get started. Update coming soon.....

Awesome! I've been considering this myself. Could you tell me what other parts (other than the new hood) you had to order in order to facilitate the swap? Thanks!

Description: BMW P/N Power bulge X6M facelift aluminum hood: 41617275285 Nozzle Array Window: 61667275175 [CORRECTED FROM 61667257234 WHICH DOES NOT FIT!] Cleaning System Hose: NOT NEEDED! Stop buffer (qty. 2): 51237265310 Underhood insulation: 51487158420 NOT CORRECT! I've ordered 51487216990 but can't confirm yet that it is correct. I'll update as soon as it is received and verified! Plastic Rivet (qty. 16) 51481915964 I plan on re-using all the mounting hardware from my existing hood, so that would be another additional list of parts if you wanted to go all-new. This should be a comprehensive list, but if I discover I missed anything before the project is complete, I'll update. [UPDATE] All the mounting hardware transferred over EXCEPT the stop buffers. If you try to remove existing stop buffers, the embedded tabs brake off inside the old hood. BTW, your M is gorgeous! Quick question, do the mud flaps help to reduce paint chipping? I'm going to have to have several areas resprayed soon due to this and might consider them along with the 3M or BMW Clear Bra and Fender protection kit. Thanks!

As for the paint-chipping, I do think the mudflaps help, but I ALSO have PPF all around the vehicle (bra, front flares, rocker-panels, rear flares and lower rear bumper). I read that some people who only had the PPF had their film loosen off over time from the constant debris spray. But I think those people lived in areas where the roads aren't as well maintained (clean). I remember when putting on the PPF, the installer told me I had two chips on rear rockers already and the car was only 3 weeks old. The reason I think flaps would help is because before putting them on, my rear rockers would always get dirty from splashing through rain puddles. Now my car looks cleaner longer because of the flaps. Hope that helps, good luck with the hood and looking forward to your completion. |

The power dome just makes the x5m look that much better. It should be a OEM feature on the ///Mx suv's.

I usually give my local dealer the chance to be competitive with online pricing I find through sites like www.ECSTuning.com, especially with $+1k purchases.
Sometimes they can, sometimes not. This time I was able to source locally

Update
Body shop started on the hood today Here are a couple of pics of the hood before they got started -
Saying they should have it done and on the vehicle in the next day or two. Once they are done, I'll post pics of the completed project. Thanks.

i'm waiting to do this mod too, I still don't understand why the 13 X6M got this and the X5M didn't, it's so stupid. Also noticed you mentioning that this hood is lighter, by how much? I'm surprised that there is actually a weight difference

Installed!
Well campers, it' can be done
Here she is in all her new glory (sort of, crappy iPhone pics) However, there are some part number updates I will be making after discovering some of the part numbers ordered weren't correct, and a couple of additional small parts are needed that are also on order. I hope to receive everything by weeks end and will post an update for everyone on what was needed with correct part numbers and better photos. Thanks!

Love it! I was drooling over the hood at the dealership last week. Dealer had a new X6M there with it. Definitely adding this to my to do list. Any further away shots by chance? |

Thanks! All together, parts, prep and paint cost around $2,300. The hood was around $1,400 of that. It's an expensive mod, but it was worth it to me.
