Transfer case issue

Hello guys, I own an X6 2012 model E71 3.5 4 wheel drive. The car has 144k and has started knocking below my feet every time the gear is shifting especially in low speeds. I removed the front shaft and the car is working perfectly now however I do not have the 4wheel drive now. Is it the transfer case box that needs repair?
