thanks jordave! that link was helpful. looks complicated though.
i bought my x5 as pre-owned. I think the previous owner of it is a smoker. if my a/c is off, air that comes out really have a bad smell. but if a/c is on, air is just fine. don't know exactly what to fix or change. went to a dealer and they just suggest a complete change of the a/c system which is too much! oh well, i'll just check with other bmw shops nearby. |

thanks! talked to them earlier and the guy told me the same thing. but they can not just change it unless it is the right time for that maintenance (which I don't know when). and also, the guy told me that exchanging the air filter won't help. really confused here! will check another shop tom.

That is one disappointing thing I'll have to say. I had a 2009 and now a 2011 x5 and both release a nasty odor when you first turn on the air. This happens with or without the recirc on. The 11 only has 1500 miles on it, pretty embarrassing when you spend $66k on a car!

I would still try to have it changed. If you have a good service writer, he'll understand your concerns and just replace it for you. The smell goes away in mine after a minute or two. Another suggestion that they told me to do was to spray deodorizer directly into the vents with the recirculation button active. It works, but only for a week or so. I'll try to post the link for an automotive deodorizing device that I've been looking into. It has very high ratings and will kill airborne bacteria, dander, smells and dust.
