I picked up mine a week ago, and the first thing I did was have it coded (..remote folding mirrors, remote tailgate, DVD-in-motion, etc.) and I ordered painted reflectors for the front. I am having spacers installed soon and I'm dropping it about an inch/inch & a half using H&R's.

Step 1, Dinan (or other) chip. It makes a huge difference in power and throttle mapping.

Not at all. I took it to a local place (..EAS in Anaheim, CA), but there are many coders who can do it without having to be with the vehicle. It's extremely worth it IMHO. I had my E9X M3's coded as well.
Who mentioned a rough ride? Surely it wasn't me, so your statement confuses me. I've been driving lowered M3's (..and other BMW's) for years, so I don't really think the X5 would ride any rougher than a dropped M. Also, most of the "rough ride" complaints are coming from those who own X5's with the air suspension (..and whose links needed adjustment); I own an X5 3.5i! Congrats Shane550X! How do you like your new ride? Have you decided to do any mods yet? I'm in a similar situation. I pick mine up today - woo hoo!
