Ok guys, just got my first \"High Battery Drain\" message this evening on my 2011 X5 M.

Please feel free to post if you have had this message, and how your dealer went about diagnosing and fixing this error.

I started getting these on my 2010 at about 17,000. At first the dealer serviced the battery and deep charged it over night. Seemed to solve it for a couple months then when it started getting cold the error came back. Car would only stay on in accessory for one minute then turn off.

BMW tested the battery and determined it would only hold 20% charge. They replaced the battery under warranty and it has been fine since.

I'm not convinced this is faulty batteries or something faulty in elctrical system or alternator, I suppose time will tell if this battery dies as well.

good luck,

Funny my 2010 x5m is in the dealership for this right now.

They claimed it was a cable on the negative terminal and the excessive draining also damaged a few cells in the battery. They are in the process of replacing the cable and battery.

They are also replacing the water pump recall.

The battery was pretty dead I felt like my starts struggled a little to ignite.

2 weeks ago I had the "Increased Battery Discharge" error on my 2011 X5 5.0. Dealer took it, checked it out and battery is deemed fine. Suggested I lock it even when garaged so that it doesn't stay awake for 15 minutes after turning it off.
Had the error once last week on a cold start after a weekend of sitting in the garage, unlocked. Since this second error, it has been locked every time it was parked, even in the garage. No issues since then.

Although, SA said if the error returns, they will need to recode the vehicle. After the initial error, they researched the issue and deemed it to be a coding issue. My gut says at the next service it will be recoded.

dealer claims the car is not driven long enough. I notice if I drive less than 20 mins I see the message next time I start the car. If I drive at least 20 mins I don't see the message.

battery was completely drained last summer when I cleaned the car. Only 1 door was open at a time and all lights were off.

Got the error again this morning. Awaiting a call back from my SA.

This happens when the battery isn't holding enough charge. I had the battery in my '09 replaced about a month ago due to this. There is a newer style of battery (AGM), so ask for that

Swapped vehicles last evening, SA has been trading notes with BMW on resolution. Thanks for the battery info, I'll pass it along.

I have no idea mine was under warranty. But I assume it was fairly involved. I think it took most of a day.

Over the weekend I got the "low battery warning" when filling up with gas, accessory on, engine off and this AM I got the "increased battery discharge" message. They must be related. I drive 40 miles per day so lack of use will not be an acceptable reason.

I have an appointment for Jan 14th to perform the water pump recall so hopefully it can wait. I have a battery tender that I will plug in a few nights a week to keep battery in decent shape. Car seemed a little slow to start this AM.....

Car is currently at BMW. Battery was dying fast and barely started this AM. Battery only at 30% charge. I was thinking that the parking guys might have left the accessories on when they parked the car (NYC) killing the battery but this started to happen over the holidays when I was driving the car (a lot) and always locked the car never left the accessory or ignition on. During this time I was not in the City nor did I valet the car.

They are working on a diagnosis of the battery drain. Glad I brought it in as another day or so it would have required a tow...... I will update.

Good to hear some of the responses and fixes you guys have had..

I had missed my scheduled dealer service, so I will update right after my next visit!

So instead of an AGM style battery is there a newer deep life cycle battery I keep hearing about?

Car is ready. New battery installed. SA advised everything else was fine. Time will tell.

Water pump recall also completed.

Just had our battery replaced after getting these messages. Dealer tried to say it was our fault for not driving the car for 18 days and said it would be $450. That must be some battery!!!!!!!

This was not the case, as the car is driven almost daily with 29K in under 2 years. Wife called BMW CS and she had them force the dealer to replace for free.

Odd thing is that they needed to replace the radio also?????? Very odd.........Steve
