2012-2013 X6 & X5 Power Steering Recall

Hello,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on my first post, but I got a panic call last night from BMW USA to tell me of a possible power steering failure in my 2013 X6.

Some "unidentified" hydraulic component may fail causing a leak of PS flud which then may cause an engine compartment fire.

The recall letter is not going out "until July", but they told me to watch for oil leaks and/or a loss of PS assist.

It affects the vehicles as noted above.

Virtually impossible to check for small leaks in the engine compartment due to the crowded components and the cladding under the engine means that any leak will be major before it hits the ground.

I would check the hydraulic reservoir on the driver's side of the engine compartment, at the front. It's a screw cap that's labeled "Petrosin only".

I'm sure it's nothing to worry too much about, since BMW isn't telling me not to drive it, but I personally stocked up on bratwurst just in case that fire breaks out.

BT

PS. And here's a for the Spartanburg assembly crew that note only buggered my PS but left off half of my M package without telling me.

I got the same message last night, however I didn't get the full details since I received a message only to call BMW in regards to steering link. I've attempted to call this am, however per record, BMW NA does not open until 9am. Will call back then. Did they offer to fix?

What parts of your M package were missing?

Missing black chrome exhaust, chrome trim gas pedal, M sill plates. Questionable on the power upgrade, but how does one quantify that with no visual proof? Thing that ticks me off is they tried to slide it by without a word.

After I complained, I saw the e-mail from Spartanburg to the dealer: "Some early M-package cars were released without the Black exhaust tips and M sill plates". They will be fitted under a regular warranty claim." No mention of the gas pedal trim. The black fog trim is a non-starter as it's not specifically mentioned on any specs- it's just a visual error on the USAweb configuration.

The stupid silver fog trims just snaps out by itself-paint it or leave it off if you dig the black fog trim look.

The exhaust has to be changed from the rear axle back as the black 'finishers' are welded onto the muffler outlets. I'm sure BMW is trying to figure a way out without replacing an expensive muffler assembly.

The steering leak recall will be 'official' with the letter. No mention on the BMW USA site as an official campaign yet. But is will be a warranty issue-provided I don't get toasted first.

I also have the M Performance Package. All parts were there, except the stainless steel gas pedal. I'll have to assume that the extra HP is there as well. BTW- I did speak with BMW, was told the same as you. Will receive official letter in July if my vehicle has been identified as one that has the PS issue. In the meantime was told to watch for changes in PS and for leaks.

Same here. I asked questions, It was late 2012 to our 2013's, affecting over 3,000 US models. (Don't know how many exports could be involved.) They also found it in testing and have not had reports of trouble by owners. I will take mine in to get it checked when I get the letter. To take it in before then may be too soon for the dealers to have the fix.

I was thinking the same thing. Get the recall letter, if it affects my vehicle, then take it in. Besides, since we are getting personal phone calls, we probably have more info on it than the dealers right now.

OT - the first batch of 2013 M Sports were missing lots of stuff (bunch of people here complaining). As noted, BMW did nothing to notify the buyers about this. It is a risk you take when you get one of the first vehicles produced that are brand new or refreshed (LCI) - early 545 owners know this very well as do early 550 owners and 745.... well, you get the point

When I got the call it was my understanding that it is both AS and non-AS cars manufactured from around March builds of 2012's to recent deliveries of 2013 models.

Hydraulic Fluid Leak

While driving my 2010 X6M on the interstate I-26 East just 150 miles from its birthplace in Greenville, NC, the hydraulic fluid reservoir sprung a leak and required a emergency stop and tow to the dealership in Savannah, GA. I'm currently in a 2014 Ford F-150 loaner, which I can barely fit in my garage!.... If it weren't for the fact I had plans in Savannah, which I couldn't change, I was tempted to have the vehicle towed back to the factory!
Subsequently, I was forced to drive back home to NC and now I'm waiting for the repair to be completed and will have to head back to Savannah to retrieve my ride. Fortunately, Savannah is a great place to visit for any reason!
