Strange noise in the front
Just recently I have been hearing this strange rubbing or knocking sound from the front of the car. It's very low and I only hear it when the car has warmed up after a few miles of driving and only when going over bumps under 20MPH. If I have the music on I can't hear it. Suspension feels normal. Sometimes I hear it only from the passenger side and sometimes only from the driver side. I did notice the spring pad is sort of rubbing on the spring. Picture attached.
Any ideas?

Is it more of a rub or clunk? I had a clunking coming from my 07 X5 and just had the Active Sway Bar replaced which fixed it (not cheap, though).

Have you had any work done on the truck recently? Had a similar noise in the wife's M3 after a coilover install. The strut bearing fasteners on the shock tower were not properly torqued.

No work done. Very low clunk/knocking sound. Only when the truck is hot and driving under 20MPH. Sometimes only on passenger side and sometimes only on driver side.

My car only has 11K miles now. The chances that it's the suspension should be pretty low. I'm thinking it may be a rattle from something lose. Engine cover? It only occurs when the car heats up.

I had my sway bar links wear out in 2+ years, and BMW stated that was normal wear and tear. Hmmmm...
Sounded like a low muffled clunk. Happened more on rutted roads than on potholes. I found it by putting it on a lift and moving the sway bar ends.

Had a rattling noise recently with similar characteristics of what you discribe. Took the tire off and didnt see anything obvious but the swaybar end link would shift when I pulled on it but was loaded since only one side was in the air. Took it in and they confirmed it was the endlink. Replaced under warranty and no more noise. Truck about ride better and much quieter.

I'm starting to think it's sway bar end links, drop links, or tie rods.

I dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for this and other maintenace. Got a call from my SA that he test drove it and did not hear anything out of the ordinary. The techs even checked the whole front suspension and did not see anything wrong. They tell me that it's the control arm bushings and sometimes it normal for it to make this noise. He tells me that there is a new M5 on the lot with 5miles and it also make this noise.
Normal? I'm thinking i'll take it to another dealer to verify.

AwwMan... I'm dealing with that same jiggle sound left front wheel.
My experience: I've had a "03" s430 -GREAT MOTOR & TRANS. But when it came to electric, airmatic, ball joint, control arm, cluster. The car was a complete nightmare. I just got a CPO "11" 2months ago and under 20mph I'm having flashbacks of my S430. Mine sounds like some sort or bushing or ball joint. Reason under 20mph is function of shocks. Once it builds speed & movement shocks become stiffer. Off redlight/stop sign the shocks aren't bouncing/moving to create stability. If you able to jack the x5 up grab the wheel and try to jiggle left&right or pull/push. If u have movement then something is getting worn. Bushing or joints |

I wonder if this is the same as the rapid clicking noise I hear after the car is turned off. Almost like a fan noise but it goes on for long after the fans have turned off as well. It's super annoying.

Well since he said he hears it driving over bumps on warmed up engine, and yours is after you shut the car off... then No.
