HELP: Rear Bumper Damage
Hey everyone. First time post here. Ran into some trouble this week. My mother was in a emergency rush and backed into my girlfriends car door. Scary part is my girlfriend was parked where I usually park the 135i. So we got lucky that it was the old Chrysler taking the damage. Damage really isn't too bad on the x5.
Just want to get some opinions of what the next step should be. New Bumper/Pain or Repair/Paint? Its alignments is a bit off now. Wonder if I can remove the bumper and re-align it properly? Any help is appreciated. Any good DIY's for removing the rear bumper? |

Removing the bumper and inspecting any hidden damage is a must. It is possible some of the metal structure is damaged or bent and it will need to be addressed as well. Most likely you'll need a new bumper cover although I'm not certain about that. They might be able to fix the one you have but it will be a lot of labor.

Before you do anything, clean the bumper and get some rubbing compound on there with some muscle (you'll need to wax afterward). A lot of that will rub out. That will at least make it more "livable" while you figure out the long term fix. To further your DIY involvement, follow the bumper removal thread on the forum for installing a hitch. You'll get a better look behind there and be able to compare the good side with the bad side to see what's out of place/broken/etc. The bumper will need to be removed anyway to replace that reflector, as the clips are behind there (unless you just take a small screwdriver to pull the thing out/break it up since it's being replaced anyway).

I'm with Poppyboy. Detail the shit of that area and hit it with a buffer and some compound. You might be able to get most of that crap off. After you have completed this, reassess the damage and then make the decision whether you want to get it fixed or not.

When that's all done, your tailpipes could use a good cleaning, too (sorry-I'm here to help)...

I'll give the bumper a good cleaning and assessment tomorrow. I already know the bumper needs to come off. Any part number for that reflective piece?

I think it's 63 21 7 158 949. They're widely available for @ $25. BTW, whenever I see filthy rims like those on an X5, I almost want to tell the owner to just pull up to my garage, and I'll help them clean 'em (almost, but not quite).
