Who told you that, the dealer? Personally I am against the insurance....How many flats have you had in the last three years? Multiply that by ~$500per tire. How much is the insurance? I'll bet that the number of flats you've had in 5years x $500 is cheaper than the insurance. Even if it comes out to break even you are basically "pre-paying" for the repairs. You will have to have real bad luck with for it tp pay off. nevermind the hassle that the dealers will try to weasle their way out of covering the repair in the fine print. As far as the wheels go, the warranty does not cover cosmetic repair and the wheels has to be proved non-functional for them to replace. Ask for the contract before signing anything, review it and read the fine print......Just my $.02 take it for what its worth....Good luck on your new '12 X5. Be sure to update us with pics!!!

I never have done it. In my humble opinion, all the extra dealer crap is just that...crap. I had RFT's on the GT-R and now on the 135i, no extra issues over non-RFT tires.

It depence on tires. For low profile tires you need it. For run-flat tires you need it, because tires should be replaced in pairs. My insurance was $1000 for 5 years. Calculate for your self.

Maybe we need some clarification.
1.) Are we talking about wheel insurance, tire insurance, or both? 2.) Papasha- How much did the tire insurance (that seems to be the type of insurance you are addressing) save you? 3.) Is there a difference between the two, do they exist independently from each other? I have only ever had a "Tire Warranty" and have never purchased ANY insurance specific to the wheels or tires. 4.) It would seem that a good car insurance policy would cover wheel damage? I'll have to check on my State Farm policy regarding this...

Yeah were talking about a wheel and tire insurance. It covers any damage to the tires.. with run flats it is a replace of tire and not repair ( nails, glass etc.). it also covers wheel damage, but not cosmetic damage scrapes/scratches etc..
it also covers up to $100 per tow. The dealership was asking $1,200. I got them to lower it to $900, run flats for the x5 with 20" wheels go for $475 ea. unmounted. At $900 i'm going for it. I'm in new york, you should see the streets here after this winter. |

IMO, you should definitely get it. I have it for both the BMW's. I would consider it a necessity with RFT,s because if there is any penetration through and it damages the inner wall, the tire is useless. Run flats are expensive and they will only replace the damaged tire not both, unless both are damaged. I had 5 run flats replaced in my old 335. I have tire, wheel and ding insurance on both my current X5 and 650 Vert. This insurance inst load of crap. You are getting a great deal on it if you can get it for 900.00. Trust me, it will pay for itself. i think the insurance is good for 5 years. You will be glad you did. If you do get it, and are leasing have it blended with the monthly payment. This way, you are only paying for the amount of time you will have the car. If you are buying the car, you can do it either way. Good luck.

Don't buy from the dealer. It will cost you around $1500. If you really want to have the tire insurance go buy from Discount tire/American tire. For my X5 with 20 inch, it costs me $270 for all 4 of them. Good deal.
