X5M winter tire setup

Gentlemen,

I'm looking to keep my OEM 20" wheels on the car for the winter, but obviously want to put some dedicated winter tires. I'm thinking of running 275/40R20 all around on the factory wheels. I called a local dealership here and they said that last year they offered 19" style 298 wheels with some continental tire, However I prefer to stick with the 20s, mainly because I don't want to dish out ~4600CAD for roughly 3 months of winter driving. Any recommendations on tire brands and specific sizes that will not screw with the AWD system? I've used Blizzak LM60 before on a different car and loved them, but they don't offer the potential sizes I would need. All suggestions welcome.

PS: I know it's way too early to look for winters, but I always leave it to the last minute and so I want to be prepared this year.

Thanks

3 problems:

1) I hate Pirelli
2) I hate run-flats
3)I don't live in the USA

I appreciate the response though. Thanks

I run the OEM 20s staggered with pirelli snow/ice tires too. Great tire for a winter only application.

As long as all four tires are the same overall diameter the AWD system will be fine. I have seen winters in 275/40-20 and 315/35-20 I have also seen a buddy run 275/40 on all four tires. You could also run a 275/45 or 275/50 it will throw your speedo a few km/hr but not hurt your AWD..obviously the closer to stock the better.
Last year I ran continental DWS all seasons and they were awesome in the snow, I planned on running winters but we had an early snow storm and I had the DWS on and they did so good I kept them on. I will run them again this winter I was so impressed.

The DWS is an awesome all season tire. OP the performance difference alone you will feel on them will be very rewarding. Not to mention a good weight savings. I just put them on my X5m and they are tremendous. Car feels so much better and the ride quality is greatly improved

Do you mean the Pirelli Scorpion Ice run-flat?

So the general feeling is the conti DWS? In a square (275)? or the stock staggered sizes?

I have them in staggered stock sizes. You will be fine with this set up. Unless you are in area that requires chains or studs on the tires.

I'm surprised that you, or anyone, would recommend All Seasons over dedicated winters though. I've never heard that before.

But thanks for your help

I have done a little DD with regards to a winter setup and with the help of Mark at Tunerworks we have settled on the following; a set of Bavaria rims as they can be custom ordered so that you can specify a custom offset to allow for a square setup but one that will look respectable with a narrower rear rim. Suggested tires will be the Blizzack non run flat in a 275/45/r20, the price point is very good with the custom Bavaria rims.

I hate Pirelli's too but have Pirelli Scorpion Winters on my X5M and they were spectacular in the loooong Montana winter. I have square 20" BBS + DWS on the car 9 months out of the year, and although they are good, they are no match for the Scorpion Winters in the snow. I wouldn't drive the DWS in our winter conditions willingly. The Cayenne crowd seems to have adopted the Pirelli Scorpion Winter as the best tire for their heavy trucks so I followed their lead.

My winter set-up is with 19" 298M wheels ($1,750 delivered) and another $1,100 for the winter rubber.

I lived in Kansas City (in Dallas now, but moving back). I run Contis DWS on my factory 20s staggered. It's amazing all-around. Dry, Rain, Deep Snow, and Sleet conditions. It's much quieter than OEM Duns and lasts a lot longer. During icy conditions, other SUVs with standard tires were swirving and my car was planted on the icy surface. It's amazing.

My Duns went out at 12-15k miles (completely balded on the inners). I now have 31k on my car, and the DWS still looks brand new.

Conti DWS aren't an ideal tire for any application. When the S wears off, they are no longer rated for snow. When the W wears off they are no longer rated for wet. Proceed at your own risk.

There is no substitute for a dedicated single purpose snow tire. Of course, your location will dictate how necessary that is. If you live in the snow belts, don't go half way.

If you elect to go with a square set up, strongly consider a size available from Nokian. Their Hakkapellita R snow tires are unbelievable. I don't know what they are made of, but you can go outside on a -10 degree morning and stick your thumbnail into the side of those tires like you can on your summer rubber on a 90 degree day. They stick in ice and snow like nothing else I have ever driven, and I have tried them all.Yes, they are kind of mushy feeling when pushed, but that's the price you pay for true winter rubber. Performance winter tires sacrifice snow and ice capability for performance.

I also got 35K out of my last set.

^^^^ The Hakkapelilita are the best bar none; I went with the Scorpion Winters to save $$$.

Question

I'm heading into my first winter with the OEM Bridgestones, had a 535xi before and didn't feel the need for winter tires as most of the driving is commuting back and forth work in downtown. Do you think I need to reconsider my assumption?

Thanks!

Your stock 'stones that come on the X5M will be useless if there is any snow or ice. I know, I tried

Are they absolutely terrible? I was going to try mine this winter....even though I have read they are crappy below freezing.

The R2 is their new version that came out this year - and the SUV is just a higher load rated version of the standard R2.
