Do M5's have this same flapper valve? If it's good enough for them, hows it not good enough for us?

I have straight pipes with Akrapovic tips on my X5M and it sounds insane! I just ordered 3'' catless down pipes and a Velos stage 2 flash tune...If I can figure out how to post videos I'll give you a teaser

I'd love to hear some videos, Cattivo. The only one I've heard from an actual X5M is the black one I linked above, otherwise everything else has been on M5's.

Can I ask why you did the H-pipe and can bigger tips be installed? The biggest tips I've found online are 4" or a little over 8" combined, but I was curious about fitting larger...assuming I can even find them.

I've seen those Akropovic tips, but at $420 a pair, that's a bit steep. I've been looking at mostly black or that burned titanium look to match the vinyl CF wrap I'm going to do to minimize how obvious the hitch looks.

Just straight pipes bro I can't justify spending almost $8k on an exhaust that sounds similar to OEM

I had originally purchased the Megan racing exhaust but another forum member, my buddy JeST bought the full Akrapovic system and asked if I wanted his old setup... after hearing it on his tuned X5M with catted dp's I gladly accepted...The H was already welded to the pipes when I got them

I'm not sure what the biggest size tips are available for our trucks but imho anything over 4'' would be overkill. My truck sounds similar to the one in your video but I'm sure unless you hear it in person, videos won't do it justice...I'll try and post a video after I install the new dp's as I'm sure it will sound even better

I have the full akra, it sounds but it wasn't that loud.

the only reason is cold start in the morning or at night.

i think it does some performance work

How's it sound compared to the Akropovic system? Have you tried sitting in both?

Oddly enough my exhaust valves are disconnected, I can't find the vacuum lines to save my life, yet the exhaust is bone stock with no aftermarket welds, so I've no clue why someone would disconnect them. I ziptied the valves into their open position and I can tell the difference in sound, a little drone at low RPM's, but under throttle it makes up for it.

(Edit - stock mufflers were removed and reinstalled at some point, but they never reconnected the flapper valves and I still can't find them)

Assuming you're happy with your exhaust, even after having heard the Akropovic instead, I'm going to do the same setup. I read on an F10 board about someone who said their car was down on power until they plugged the open vacuum lines, so hopefully I can find them when I do the muffler delete.

I think the full Akrapovic exhaust sounded similar to OEM...We permanently tied open his valves and it sounded a lot better...imho I think my straight pipe setup sounds a lot meaner.

This morning was my first time being able to hear a morning idle and it sounds mean even with the stock exhaust and both valves ziptied open.

I used 12awg copper wire to tie the actuator arm open on the exhaust valve on my OEM exhaust and it sounded much better on cold start and at or above 3k rpm...but straight pipes still sound way better

I'm deciding on tips now, then I'll do it. I'm just torn about doing an h-pipe or x-pipe since the stock exhaust has neither, yet aftermarket exhaust do and some don't...trust BMW engineering or the aftermarket who wants more power or a reason to say "ours is better because we have an x-pipe".

Ultimately not using an h/x-pipe will only save like $30 using a generic one (it's metal piping, not brain surgery), then one bend on each side and we're in business...why Turner charges $1000 for this is beyond me. I've found matching tips for $140 shipped on eBay, then we're looking at maybe $200 in material and labor to shed like 40lbs and make it louder.

You've got a decent amount of blowoff valve sound coming from this video...did you do anything to it to help increase the sound? I've got K&N filters but I've yet to hear an BOV noises.

I measured the piping diameter this morning, came up with 3" so that narrows down my choices for tips. My next concern is do I do an X/H pipe on a turbocharged vehicle? I did a generic Google search and of course opinions are all over the highway, but most tend to say no in that after the turbo, flow is king and an X/H pipe isn't going to help with scavenging since boost is shoving the air out. I'm still on the fence though because full catback exhaust systems for these trucks come with or without an x-pipe. I know placement is important as to not have the air pulses hit each other, so I'm leaning towards x/h pipe and just duplicating what Turner did with simple piping and tips.

$150 of 3" stainless steel tubing, $100 3" inlet/dual 4" outlet tips, then shop said it'd take maybe $150 in labor.

This is my plan too - full dump pipe back system with decat.

Not really concerned about weight difference between titanium and stainless on a 2500kg car, so will just knock it together with the MIG.

After listening to numerous clips of straight-thru's, think I'll add some hotdogs or mid-pipe resonators - the note of the 4.4 at lower rpm is a bit...err.. rubbish.

How do you get the oval spacers out? There are two on each side and they are as wide as the exhaust so I'm not clear on how you get them out?
