Thinking about brake upgrade for X5M
All,
I have even thinking about a BBK for the X5M. Yes this will not be a track car, but I have to say when it comes to safety and god forbid I have to make a hard stop during DD to potentially avoid an accident I know the upgrade can save a few feet at least. Also we all know they look good. I have asked my dealer about Dinan doing a kit and they don't offer it for the X5M. I know I can go direct, but I have heard that the rear can't be done because you lose the e brake and that won't pass inspection. I'm curious if some of the vendors could chime in on this. I know Velos has a mean X5M with a BBK all around. Thanks in advance all. |

Brake kits on X5M are purely for cosmetics. Stock brakes are amazing and fade free.

I wouldn't go that far, but they are quite good.

So ya it seems like you're a track guy that seems to like setting lap times or wtv, but for an average joe, they will be more than fine on the road and definitely ok on the track. For the amount of money you'd want to spend on an aftermarket brake kit, i just dont think its worth it...

I agree with all statements guys. I definitely have not spent enough time understanding the stopping capabilities of the stock brakes. Since I barely owned it a week and was rear ended.
I know the components are brembo and made to BMW SPEC. Once I start to feel the capabilities better that will give me a much better sense. My main curiously is the rear assembly on the car. With a sliding piston caliper and the e brake if it is possible to do a rear set up or at least upgrade the rotors on the vehicle. Heat dissipation is a big priority and hey I may take it on the track. I can tow my E90 M3!!! Ha! Thanks for the input all. It is a big upgrade and $$$. This was the very first modification I did to my M3. Those brakes were really poor and whether it was for track or street I did not like the feel of them at all. |

I'm with you on the rotors, it would be nice if Brembo or Stoptech offered a drilled or slotted direct replacement rotor for this vehicle...

If you are doing it for looks, then it's a no brainer. If you are doing it for performance, you are wasting money. You can actually get better performance with a different compound of pads than an off the shelf big brake kit. Can't argue with the appearance factor, however. Porsche has done it for years with it's big red calipers and now yellow calipers for their carbon ceramic rotors. Funny it has taken so long for other manufacturers to catch on to the marketing wisdom of big brakes.

I have some good things about Adams. Yes there definitely is the look factor in this equation. Can understand like one of the posts said why they have not caught into this? It's not a huge cost expense and I know they did jump up on the x5M with a monoblock front set up
I saw a cayenne GTS the other day as I was thinking to myself just how mean it looks with this BBK front and rear combo. I think they even do it for the cayenne S. AMG does it as well. It's a heavy car and personally whether tracking (which will not be alot but would love to see what it can do) or DD in my mind I do have a comfort level in knowing I can stop in emergency situations. Pads are an option. The car is black and I would like some contrast. Got the space grey theme on the outside. Maybe paint them that color or a nice deep blue. I have asked around and still have not heard anything about whether you lose the E brake and can't pass inspection. |

Just an update all.
So Brembo does have a sensor in the Caliper that will retain the E brake functionality. Good news! I talked to Glen over at Vivid Racing who has been nothing but extremely responsive and informative. Now I just to gather up 9K for the upgrade!! Next year most likely. I may go the slotted route because the vehicle is a DD and the harsh new England winters can pound cars and don't want to worry about stress fractures if the rotors were drilled. I know its unlikely for the fractures to occur just may be a safer option to go slotted. |

9K so your calipers are a different color??? Just powdercoat the existing calipers, and stick an M logo on them, or brembo or whatever the hell you want. Someone was selling a takeoff set that were all prepped for powdercoat about a month ago. Stock brakes are Brembos - so what gain do you think you are getting?
I'm sorry, spend your money however you want, but that is CRAZY! |
