Another post claimed that the 6er and X6 were niche cars and people who don't own them don't understand them. Additionally yet another post quoted the profitability of these vehicles to BMW.

Well, if you had to design, test, prototype and build these "niche" vehicles in small quantities, where is the big profit? I think BMW is wasting its efforts in trying to be Toyota. They (BMW) want to be everything to everybody and try to create a market where no one was asking for that type of product.

In the current economic times does this type of "niche' strategy make any sense?

Actually you design, test, prototype them once and in the case of the X6 a lot of the parts are from the X5 so the build part is not that expensive. They don't have to sell very many to make money.

The m3,m5 and m6 are "niche" cars with your logic BMW should not be building them either.

The X6 is much lower volume than the X5. So in that vein, I agree that the M6 shouldn't be built either, however; the M3 and M5 are based off BMW's high(er/est) volume production lines. Now, that is a bit more logical.
