Ive had all injectors replaced about a year ago, and then it was back again about 3 months ago because 3 of them had failed again. Not sure if this recall/SIB will replace what I have now, but I know there are still issues. I have it back in the shop at the moment, for heavy fuel smell in the cabin (likely leaking injectors again), and constant loud clicking (not the normal injector clicking that you hear when idling, but goes away when driving) even at highway speeds over the radio.

Ugh. I need something new.

My 2010 X5M had a loud clicking which was more noticeable in sport mode (i.e. lower speed, but higher RPM). 1st time I had BMW tear it down, there were 3 collapsed hydraulic lifters and a broken rocker. They had no idea of the cause, but replaced under my Maxcare warranty. Ticking came back ~8 months later and it ended up being another failed lifter. ~4 months after that, 2 more failed lifters, 1 of which was a repeat from the 1st repair. At that point, Maxcare refused any future lifter work and BMW wanted to replace the whole head. Nobody at BMW could ever state a definitive cause for the repeated failure and the only option was exploratory surgery at my expense unless they found something that Maxcare agreed to replace.

I ended up trading it in on the 2013 X6M I have now, since I knew it was only a matter of time before more lifters failed without coverage. My only solace was that I got $1650 back on my $2700 extended warranty after it covered ~$15,000 in repairs.

Got mine dropped off today. Tried to get myself an M* or i8 loaner. They giggled as they handed me keys to a 528i...I had to try :-)

Ha, my dealer told me they have had 11 loaners TOTALED since November. They made me send a complete copy of my insurance policy.

They laughed hysterically when I asked for an M loaner (it was worth a try).

First post from a lurker off an on! My X6M had 4 injectors replaced at 54,000 Km back in Nov 2014 (apparently a response to a stored code with no warning lamp)...My vehicle has been fine since and is now at 67,000 Km. It was manufactured Nov 12. Based on what I have read on this thread, I presume the remaining 4 must have been revision 12. To be sure I contacted the dealer today, as I was last in for service early Nov 15 and before the TSB posted here. Wonder what the response will be on the remaining 4. Seems strange that they only did 4 first time around though. I still have lots of warranty...4yr/80 end of Nov 16 followed by extended warranty through 2018. Thanks to boards like this, I do my own basic servicing from brakes/rotors to plugs/oil changes and other filters where I have to which at the moment is just on my son's 2008 323i..which has never had a problem and is now at 98K. I'm still on the first pads on the X6...but have a set ready to go on...rotors are fine. Lots of time on my hands these days to learn and continue to baby everything.

You guys recommend changing injectors ASAP or waiting a few months to get the most use out of them? X6M has no symptoms and is running strong. There is no expiration on the bulletin right?

Do they do any ecu resets after the injector replacement?

Just want to make sure I do not have to re flash the tune after they do the work.

Thanks

I just gotta call from my SA stating all injectors were replaced and will be ready for pickup tomorrow...he told me I had index 8 and anything below 11 will be replaced. Is it just me or was everyone else under the same impression that the newer the build date the higher the index number would of been? I have MY2011 build date 6/11

That must explain the truck only getting 9.3mpg...I also need new windshield wipers on the front/back, your gonna love this...I was quoted $150 for replacement!
WTF is wrong with these dealers?!?!

Yikes - 9.3mpg? Makes my 12.2mpg look great. At least you're getting new injectors

Wait...what? $150 for wipers?? The sad thing is that some people will pay that.

The injectors have 6 random numbers on them from Bosch that tell the computer how to read each individual injectors resistance, so they do have to be coded...I can't say if that'll affect an aftermarket tune though.

I did a lot of learning on the 3 series boards since this issue became theirs long before us. When they failed on an I6 engine, they had to be replaced in banks, ie 1-3 and 4-6, so if one or more failed in either bank, the whole bank gets replaced. I can only assume the same happened in your situation, leaving the other bank needing a replacement...I'd get it done regardless because they're a headache when they completely fail.

I'd do it just for the sake of doing it. Mine was running strong as well, did a 160mph run and got my first warning of failure when the engine was backfiring and stumbling. Turned it off amf back on, cleared codes and it was fine the rest of the day. Next morning though...backfiring, stumbling, tons of smoke and clearing codes didn't help...car was undriveable. Just do it while it's still fresh at the dealership and you'll get a loaner, so you've got no real reason not to.

Mines Alpine White and I was having clumps of black soot on the back like I'd gone through an asphalt paving zone, but the car still ran fine. Turns out that spotting was unburnt fuel from poor atomization, which is what the new injectors solve. Depending on your foot, you should get better mileage as well.

I've had the truck for 9 months now and have averaged right around 10-12mpg since day 1, lately it's been 9.3mpg...I could see getting such horrible mileage if I were flooring it every time I drove it but most of the time I just go with the flow of traffic barely going above 4k rpm and still get under 10mpg

I told my SA I wouldn't pay $150 for an oil change never mind wipers...If anyone needs new wipers replaced, stop by I'm only charging $50 lol

The back diffuser on mine was also full of black soot that wouldn't come clean...1 of the reasons I replaced it. My truck had no symptoms of having bad injectors and ran perfect, hopefully with the new index 12 I'll pick up a few more mpg

Thanks again to Creamo3 for starting this thread

I think my truck was the first the dealer i took it to did the recall on. the advisor said they were contacting BMW when it was done to see if they had to update the computer and my advisor said BMW informed them that it was not required to update the ecu.

Can't believe some of you guys are getting 9-10 mpg. This is my second x5m and my last one I had velos tune, dps, exhaust etc and I used to beat that truck and I never saw less then 12 mpg (was a 2011). My 13 I have now, I have left stock and I think the worst I've seen is 14.6. I had the injectors replaced over a week ago and only put 20 miles on it so I don't know if there will be an updated mpg.

Thanks Chris.

Does the dealer give you guys a warranty paperwork after the injector replacement? I had my injectors replaced last August I believe they are index 11. Not sure if they will replace perfectly good ones but I prefer to have a warranty in hand just in case.

Good question. Said another way, once they replace your injectors under this recall will the new injectors fall under the extended warranty?

I'd say it depends on how likely they are to be replaced. My 2013 X6M with a 5/2012 build date has index 12 injectors and no symptoms or codes, so they were not replaced. There's also no warranty extension for the injectors like there was for the driveshaft recall. Now, if the index 12 injectors are really the magic bullet, then I've got nothing to worry about, but if they fail a year from now, I'd have been better off waiting to get them checked.

If you know you have older index injectors, then I'd get them replaced now. Planned maintenance is always better than unplanned maintenance.
