Toddler Locked In Car
My son is fine, he was stuck in the car for about 20 min with full AC on until the Police got the car open.
I am posting this to see if there is a problem with my specific car or there is just some deficiancy in the keyless system implementation. I recently bought a 2012 X5 D for my wife to use as he daily with my son, and for our long family travels. I was out of town for work and my wife put my son in the seat and he started playing with the key. Door was shut as my wife needed to get in from the other side of the car. but all the doors were locked with the key inside. After this incident, i compared and tested the X5's keyless system to my parents 2011 528. On the 528, it is not possible to have any door or the trunk open, lock the doors with the key, and shut all the doors. The car will lock, but immediately unlock the doors and call you an idiot with a couple of beeps. system works perfectly. However the X5 behaves differently. With the Driver door open, the car will not lock at all with the key's lock button. nothing happens. with the trunk open, pressing the lock button will look all the doors. with the key inside, the trunk will close, but reopen right away and beep at you. But with any of the other 3 doors open, you can lock the car with the key and shut the door, and you are locked out. So why do the X5 and 528 behave differently? Is it an installation difference between the cars since they are different generations? or is there something faulty with the X5 that i need to have checked out? While this may not be the reason my son was locked in the car, but it is something i found while trying to replicate the issue. My son could have locked the door once my wife was outside the car, at which point he would be locked inside any keyless bmw car. or my wife locked it instinctively with the door open and the system did not recognize the key inside. I know there are multiple other ways to get into car if locked, but i am looking to advice to see if this is a known issue with other 2012 x5s or if its something i should definitily have the dealer check out. Thanks |

X5 definitly does have comfort access. without comfort access, the key would need to stay in the car at all times while its on.
the only difference between the 528 and the X5 was the key itself. 528 has the new big chubby key, while the x5 is the bmw classic fob with comfort access. I had originally thought it was not possible based on my experience with the 528. but i assure you that is the case. will take video of it if needed. your replies are leading me to believe there is something wrong with the car and should get it checked out |

No coding. Not really even sure what that is. But probably won't be doing anything like that to my wife's car.
I had originally thought maybe some sensor by the passenger and rear doors weren't working but I left the second key in the middle row a few days later. Locked the car with the first key and then closed the trunk. But it worked probably and opens right back up. |

A similar thing happened to me with my wife's '13 X5M at a hand car wash. The car definitely has comfort access yet the guys at the car wash managed to lock the doors with the key fob inside. Needless to say, I was pretty ticked off while I waited 30min for someone to get there and open up the car for me. This should not happen

Sounds like it is working correctly. Why she would let your child play with the keys is beyond me, especially with the doors closed. I know mine will not lock with a door open( can't remember which door) and will run without the key nearby after starting. ( I've gone back into the house)

yeah we have that set up. I was out of town and didnt know what to do so the police were called. and can do the phone unlock too.
but thats besides the point. I dont think it should have had that problem anyways. i should not have a door open, lock the car with the keys and shut the doors inside. the 528 works properly and unlocks automatically, x5 does not. |

My wife the way she grabs the handle will lock the car doors on accident with the keys in the car (Usually in her bag) She has locked our child in once, luckily (very luckily) I actually was not traveling and in the same city to help her.
I need her to stop being lazy and keep the key in the ignition. I think that helps? Otherwise we've been able to recreate locking the car just by holding the handle a certain way...

once is a error, twice is a very big mistake.
If it were my wife, the third time I would tell her it is her problem and suggest getting a brick. She would also have to pay for it herself.

I don't know, I was servicing my car, the keys were on the driversseat. The car remain on. The daydriving light was on I want to switch them of by looking the vehicle.. Wasn't possible by CA, immediately unlock it again while the key was inside the car...
So when the key are close enough to start the engine you can not lock it... And when they are to far to start you can lock it but you can unlock it aswell.. |

I can't even follow most of what you guys are talking about. I bet it gets REALLY confusing when you have two keys in play; one inside the car and one outside.
I do know that you should NOT leave your key sitting on the seat while washing the car, as mine constantly locked and unlocked while I washed the doors and kept touching the handles. So I put it about ~50 ft away in the garage while washing. Would putting it in the ignition solve this?

Just to add to this thread, apparently our X5 does the same thing. I thought it was just a fluke, but now I'll have to test it out. I'll also compare to my '11 M3 and see how it behaves. Both vehicles have Comfort Access... Will report back.
With two small children, this is disconcerting..
