Exclamation ConnectedDrive no longer supported on MY 2012 and below - Retrofit possible?

Hi Everyone,

I tried a search but did not yield anything relevant.

I have a 2012 X5 35i Premium I purchased new that my wife drives. I went to renew the ConnectedDrive subscription and was told BMW no longer supports CD on model years 2012 and below.

I was told by BMWNA that as of Jan 1, 2016, BMW will no longer renew CD subscriptions because the technology is incompatible (combox?) and that the CD on the older vehicles will cease on Jan 1, 2017. Apparently, I could have renewed prior to Jan 1, 2016 for an additional year though. Has anyone heard about this?

I used to be able to send Google Maps addresses to my car via browser and also via the BMW Remote app but not anymore. I recently noticed that my X5 no longer comes up in the app (my 340i does) and the ConnectedDrive>Messages folder is no longer available on my navi. Pressing the SOS button calls 911 now.

I have used CD in the past in my E92 M3 when I was involved in a severe head-on collision so I understand its importance. My wife drives the X5 with the kids now and I'm worried she'd have issues in the event of an emergency whether it be an accident or roadside service.

Is the solution as easy as retrofitting the combox from the 2013 X5 into my 2012 X5? BMWNA is pretty much telling me sorry and that there's nothing they can do. It's a safety thing for me and feel a pit in my stomach that my family is driving around without Roadside or anything else. Sure, AAA would be a solution for Roadside but the piece of mind of the SOS button is priceless.

Thanks!

You can install the newer radios, but itll cost ya. Aprox $700+ for a used radio on ebay and the coding costs and cable adapters add prob another 300-700 dollar bucks.

Cell phones technology is cheaper and faster. Perhaps you can find an alternate method using that?

Interesting. Cost aside my thought was if the driver is incapacitated CD should help. When I had my accident, I had no idea what happened and woke up to my friend telling me someone was talking to us through speakerphone and help is on its way.

Retrofitting seems like an option, albeit an expensive one, for me.

Has anyone had success in getting BMW to renew ConnectedDrive for an additional year though? From what the BMWCD and BMWNA reps were telling me, I could have renewed prior to Jan 1, 2016 but that was the cutoff and I'm SOL now.

I've hit the SOS button before, even though my subscription has long expired. I still got a representative on the other end.

Have you tried it this year by chance? I pushed it this afternoon and got 911.

Just confirmed that I have a safety plan subscription through 12/21/18 so would venture to guess that they would update the hardware if becomes obsolete prior to that ending?

See, that was my point with BMWNA. They blamed my gap in subscription as the reason why I can't add CD after Jan 1, 2016. They also told me that they service will end for everyone on Jan 1, 2017 which I thought didn't sound right at all. There's no way they'd give that short of a notice on such a critical service.

I feel like my feet are being held to the fire because I did not renew before Jan 1, 2016 and they're just giving me every excuse why I can't re-enroll. I want to give them money!

I could be wrong, but I think this is due to the older 2G technology being phased out by the big carriers. There's a fat premium to be paid for wireless services using 2G, and my guess is that BMW doesn't want to pay it.

Very very plausible... GM's onstar suffered the same issue

Ok, that completely makes sense then. Yes, 1X CDMA and GPRS are shutting down across the carriers so that makes sense. I think the module in my X5 may have been the Sprint 1X CDMA radios. Visiting my dealership tomorrow but doubt there will be an inexpensive solution to this.

Still, it looks like I missed this Dec 31 cutoff since others with MY2012 vehicles are subscribed for the next 1-2 years. The technology is supported through then, but it looks like I missed the line in the sand. I would like to move that line in the sand but have not been successful via BMWNA.

Interestingly enough, I just picked up a 2015 Ford Focus ST to modify, and it uses BT to dial 911 in the case of a crash. No built in cellular connectivity.
