High mileage x5m?

Hi guys,I'm new here and I'm looking into getting a cheaper high mileage x5m. I was wondering if there are any guys with over 150k miles here? And if so what issues have you had/ it are having?

Do not buy, you would want a much lower mileage one to keep up with maintence costs and repairs. A high mileage one would most likely have overdue services that need attention. Things that fail often that cost a lot are:

Rod bearings
Injectors
Cracked coolant pipes
Oil leaks (given)

I appreciate your input. Does your x5m have 150k plus miles?

I'm at 143,000 on my 2010 X5M. Owned it CPO'ed since 2012 with 13,000 miles. Have gone through all the major recals/TSBs (injectors, fuel pumps, back up camera harness). I've also gone through several Filtered Air Duct crank case hoses. Recently just tackled turbo coolant lines, coolant y-pipe, turbo oil return lines and housing, auxiliary turbo coolant pumps, vacuum pump (oil leak), spark plugs, coils, fuel tank breather line, lower oil pan gasket with oil pump chain adjustment (was very loose), both rear suspension air bags, full front suspenion bushing and ball joint over haul, shock and spring mounts and perches with Dinan Spring install, transfer case output shaft seal and o-ring, Guibo Flex disc, and, transfer case actuator gears, transfer case mount bushing, starter, emergency brake actuator, wheel bearings with f85 front rotors and pads, just to list a few....

Still need to tackle some major oil leaks... most likely valve cover gaskets and valve stem seals, upper oil pan gasket and potentially rod bearings while in there, rear differential is also leaking.

But overall it's an awesome car!

I appreciate all that info. It's a shame they are not more reliable and you have to do all that work around the 150k mark

It’s a high horsepower twin turbo V8 with a hot V. It’s going to require more preventative maintenance than your standard SUV. These trucks are beasts IMO. I love mine. Yes it takes more to keep it in good shape but that’s the price for such an awesome piece of engineering.

If you’re not mechanically skilled, don’t have the standard BMW software tools and don’t work or or want to learn to work on your own vehicle then stay away. These trucks are not hands off

It's not the maintenance that bothers me. It's the major repairs everyone keeps talking about. I have a shop with a lift at my house. But I'm not interested in pulling an engine for a rebuild.

185K Miles N63 modded (bolt-ons, custom intake), & tuned to 600hp checking in. (internally the n63 is identical to the s63 minus the upgrades the S63 gets such as forged pistons, better exhaust cam, & more oil sprayers).

The s63/n63 platform is a complex beast. However as SpaceGray just mentioned, if you take care of it, you can easily get 200K+ miles out of it without rebuild (Liqui Moly or better 5-40 oil + 2 cans Mos2 additive every 5K low temp thermostat, install catch cans, ditch the engine cover, open the hood when you park) Not only can you get high miles out of it with these simple mods, you will still be just as fast a new X5M running sub 4 second 0-60 times & mid to high 11's 1/4 miles (see receipts below). Not to many 180k+ mile 10 year old 5400lb SUV's can lay claim to that, so say what you will about this platform, it is a beast when treated right. Proper oil changes & Heat Management is the key here, it destroys everything under the hood so keeping your engine cool is critical. Parking with the hood closed after along stretch of stop and go traffic is what kills all of those complex plastic & rubber bits under the hood. Also recommend mixing in 3-4 gals of E85 with every tank to keep the LSPI demons at bay.

I really appreciate the last 2 post. The catch can setup makes complete sense. And I was hoping if I bought a good running higher milage one that I could do catch up maintenance and keep it running strong.

I also added new coil packs, so these other guys on here either don’t know what to do with a high mileage car or don’t know how to find good deals on replacement parts find a good one that has all the maintenance kept up which you buy a car like this and you’re going to keep up with the maintenance which they have 120K mile maintenance package when you bought the car so one with 150,000 miles will just need a slight tuneup change spark plugs oil change and add a few of these upgrades like I did but definitely add some catch cans and you’re good to go if you get one hit me up and I’ll show u how to build ur own full stock CCV, elimination lines to aftermarket hoses and race fittings I live my car since I put the couch cans on it hasn’t gone into limp mode. Once you just need to know what to do with a higher mileage car like these find a good one good luck.
I'd be interested to know more about the 3 port catch can setup. Why is 3 port better than 2?

Thanks

Running the 3 port allows you to adjust the crankcase vacuum past the BMW specced -0.9psi to around -9 to -10psi (at idle and cruise conditions). Benefits include:

Vastly improved oil control (no more oil leaks above the oil line)

Increased Fuel & Water Flash (fuel/water evaporates much more quickly from the oil at this reduced crankcase pressure).

Less oil burning through the valve stem seals.

This setup is unique to the E70 N63/S63 only. They did away with the lower intake vacuum taps on the later gens.

My wife and I went ahead and bought a used x5m. We flew from VA to Florida to but it. And we were actually able to buy one with less miles than I originally thought for our budget. Our car had 125k when we picked it up. I feel like the price was good. 12k

We drove a little over 1000miles home without surprise issues. We bought it knowing the traction control light was on. Got home and checked everything over. The next day I did a few dragy 0-60 test as a baseline before I started maintenance and performance work. 4.59 secs isn't to bad all stock. It was a fun trip we are excited to own it and my wife likes it so much she's excited to restore it back to original condition!
