M57 Inlet Pipe Left Loose by dealer

Hi All,

I picked up a 2012 X5d recently which was absolutely amazing until it started burning oil. Its currently at an independent mechanic where im sure theyll find at least one bad turbo. Before the smoke got too bad I noticed that the turbo inlet pipe coming from the mass airflow sensor came completely undone and the clamp was loose. I secured it back on but the damage was already done. The smoke out the exhaust got worse and I took it to the shop.

The last place the car was serviced was the BMW dealer by the previous owner. Because the car was serviced by BMW its whole life I never did get an inspection of my own done.

1. Is it reasonable to assume that the loose inlet pipe letting unmetered and unfiltered air into the turbos/engine caused a turbo failure? (I will probably have them do a compression test too because there was a lot of sand being kicked up on my drive).

2. If its reasonable to assume that could be the cause, is there any chance the dealer will just own up to it?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Not much you can do unless it was picked up rather quickly. When I bought my E55 2 years ago, 2 months into ownership, my right front bearing seized up on causing $1800 of damage. Looked into the service history, Mercedes serviced the bearings 2 years/6000 miles ago and since the dealer was out of State, I just sucked it up

dusting a turbo erodes the compressor. low boost/no boost is typical symptom.
