High Mileage 2010 BMW X5M

I was thinking about purchasing this vehicle it has about 98k miles (158k km), but haven't taken the plunge just yet, have test drove it - drives like a beast. Mileage is mostly HWY miles and 1 owner. I'd be moving from a gas guzzler anyhow, so the MPG doesn't really concern me. If the vehicle has a clean vehicle history report and the BMW Pre-Purchase inspection shows up OK, is there anything else I should be worried about in terms reliability if the car is maintained to specs ? Any information along these fronts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Get a maintenance record if possible to see if big ticket items were replaced.

Injectors, Turbo Hoses, pumps etc.

My injectors, aux turbo pump and water pump failed at 68K miles.

Thanks

Thanks for the info pc
That being said, since this car is out of warranty, is it better to retain my own indy mechanic to do future work or purchase one of those 3rd party warranties that supposedly bmw honors which we all know is nothing but a vehicle servicing contract littered with asterisks's lol

Find yourself a good indy regardless...we don't call BMW service dept. the stealership for no reason...only thing their missing while they work on your car/truck is a ski mask!

Word. A competent Indy mechanic is the key for any car out of warranty.

No, just a personal preference to not own a German car out of warranty. Too many horror stories for me to roll the dice.

But, if you dive in, suggest only after you trust a mechanic.

My two scents...condition is more important than miles. IE how it was treated is really important. I would rather buy a car with moderate high mileage that is in fabulous condition and was babied than one that has been thrashed. Second thought, remember the miles don't go down. Someday you will be selling it. Know your exit strategy. IF you are getting it cheap enough it could be a good deal.

Thanks guys for all your feedback. I have the maintenance records from BMW, originally bought and serviced all under warranty at 1 BMW Dealership, all work consistent with the Mileage/Year of the car, nothing out of ordinary, all recalls performed, Injectors were replaced and HPFP also as well as Turbo Aux. pump. I also got an Engine Compression and Leak Down Test performed and all yielded a relatively healthy engine: For compression; all 8 cylinder range between 170-180PSI/12-12.5 BAR and for leak down test on all cylinders range between 0 - 4%. I have a reputable BMW Master Mechanic Indy i will take to in the future for all upcoming work if needed, decided against those shady 3rd party warranty offers, hope it all works out

As mentioned by a previous poster, be sure you price it accordingly, given that when you go to sell, it will be difficult given the mileage.

Since you have the service records you should be able to get a name and address (perhaps even phone) for the previous owner. Call them. That's what I do on every used car I buy. Don't trust carfax or the dealer records. There may be an accident or maintenance performed at an indy. Good luck.

Do not waste your money on cleaning the valves, the S63 does not build up carbon like the other BMW turbo engines. Its a very expensive job, the engine will get dropped and you will find they are clean. I did mine at 110,000 mile and just ended up spending a couple thousand to satisfy curiosity.

Great info, any pics of what the valves looked like?

Thanks Wally, was contemplating but now won't . Love the beast, drives like a dream except for the fact i got the "Level Suspension Control Malfunction" the other day, and it's at the stealership as we speak. They said Rear Air bags are gone and need replacing. Sounds a bit strange when the entire vehicle was fine before that height wise, then all of a sudden the rear now finds itself slammed to the ground evenly on both sides. Sounds more like a Module/Regulator type thing if it was Bags wouldn't the sag be more uneven on each side, signaling Rear air bag leaks or something, I'm not sure, what do you guys think?
Thanks again,

Wait. Are you at the stealership out of warranty and not at an indy mechanic? You have 2k miles remaining on a car with 98k miles? Is there an extended CPO warranty? I've read through your posts, but am confused.

Keep in mind, CPO doesn't cover everything, but, obviously, keep making a list of every little thing to get done before it expires.
