Do you think an extended warranty is worth it in general? I have a 2013 X5 50 with 36K miles and warranty up in May 2016. Quoted $4341 for 72mo/70K PL and $2295 for MP extension for 24 mos. Dealer said likely to need brakes in next 24 mos which would pay for MP extension all by itself. Planning to keep for maybe 3 years tops.

Just my opinon, FCD, but you are on the bubble... if you were keeping it longer, I would more likely say to get it.
As for the brakes, would they be covered under any warranty?? They are wear and tear.
And, just buy the pads and rotors and do them yourself! Not hard, much cheaper. And fun! If you drink beer at the same time.

Personally, I have a 2012 50i M Sport, ~30k miles, NO Issues whatsoever. Factory Warranty expires next month - Feb 2016. I do not plan on extending it, but I do have the CPO warranty for 2 years that kicks in after next month. I know it covers less, but hoping it will be "enough". I am also prepared to take care of the little things on my own that may pop up, if need be. With club discount, parts are discounted at the dealer.

rolling with no warranty, 6k or 5 k for a warranty is way too much, stash that money away and if anything breaks use that as your policy

If you don't take your truck to the stealer after the warrenty expires it isn't even remotely close to expensive to maintain.

Here are a few examples of things I've had to fix on my truck at my DIY cost vs stealer prices.

These are my quoted prices from Fields BMW in Orlando.

Coils $250 DIY / Dealer $1350
Plugs $110 DIY / Dealer $800
HPFP (2) $300 DIY / Dealer $2k
1 Injector $150 DIY / Dealer $3.5k
Rear Brake Pads $80 DIY / Dealer $???

~$900 DIY
~$7550 (???) Stealership ...

If you include the cost of labor in total for about 6 hours at a rate of $80-100 an hour at a good shop your still well under $2k.

Couldn't agree more ... prices are spot on!

But ... you also need some specialty tools to get these jobs done, i.e. spark plug tool. What's the kind you use? Swivel, magnetic, extension type? What brand? I'm about to embark on this, that's why I'm asking ...

How 'bout injectors? Tools?

Here is a list of specialty tools I have needed so far.

Rheingold 3.45.40 ( For coding the injectors ).

Search google for a link and how-to for an install. (Getting this working has honestly been the hardest part of working on this truck.)

Diagnostic cable for Rheingold

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Spark Plug Tool

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Snap On 14mm & 17mm Fuel Line Sockets

https://store.snapon.com/Injector-Li...c-P869619.aspx

The fuel line sockets are not 100% necessary they just make the job a lot easier, they are also used for the HPFP.

You also should have a full range of E-Torx sockets since BMW uses these everywhere.

If anyone is interested I am replacing the rest of my bank 1 injectors and I could try and make a how-to as far as replacing and coding them goes on the S63 engine.
